  • A business received an e-mail from J__ at 11:24 PM:

"I just paid for the following order from my iPad..."

The business receives another e-mail from J__ at 8:57 AM the next day.

"ps. this is my second email and I still have received no reply. I sent the other one from my iPad."

    WHAT?!

You are complaining that you "still have received no reply" when your first e-mail has only existed during business hours for FIFTY SEVEN MINUTES?

What, does he think the small, family business is 24-hours, or has overseas customer service that operates overnight? Is this the effect that companies like Amazon.com are having on customers' perceptions?

If I were writing to Amazon.com, and I wrote to them 8 1/2 hours ago at 11:30 PM, I might mention "this is my 2nd e-mail, and I haven't received a response" since they farm out their customer service to a third party, and their customer service is 24/7.

But for most American businesses? Give me a break.

  • Any possibility the email came from the other side of the world, and it was several business hours that passed for the sender, rather than overnight hours?  Alternatively, does the sender realize it is a small business, rather than a giant company?  It can often be very hard to tell online.
