  • I've heard some good things about them.

It seems to me anyone who wants to be a student there needs to be willing to accept the environment of mostly Novus Ordo Catholics for professors and fellow students.  So if you have any aversion or are outspokenly opposed to the Newmass, you probably don't belong there.

As I recall, they offer a Traditional Latin Mass at least on occasion, but keep in mind it's going to be an "Indult" type setting, and likewise you won't be finding any open opposition to Vatican II or the New Code of Canon Law (1983).

So if it's just a moderately tolerable setting that you're after, one where you don't have to worry about "transgender studies" or men being allowed to use the Women's bathroom because they're "presenting as a woman," perhaps Wyoming Catholic is a good place to check out.

They are eager to welcome visitors, and it looks like a beautiful setting.  They have a lot of horses there, too, if you like horses.

  • I don't know of any traditional Catholic colleges other than the one the SSPX runs, St. Mary's College. I remember reading about one of the more conservative Novus Ordo colleges which I won't name. An FSSP priest wanted to visit and say Mass and have a conference or something and when the administration of the College found out about it they offered the FSSP priest an ultimatum. They said he could only come if he said a Novus Ordo Mass for them. The FSSP priest refused and didn't come.
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • Yes, I was at that college at the time. What you heard was not entirely accurate.

The FSSP priest came, whom I personally chaperoned while I was there, but he was not allowed to celebrate mass on campus at the time because they said he didn't have permission from the local bishop, which is complete hogwash since they invited visiting priests all the time who I doubt had permission to celebrate mass there. Also this FSSP had a universal celebret, which even further invalidates the argument by the novus ordo priest staff there. Needless to say, there was a public park right next door to the campus, so we had the TLM there as well as in a private home during the week he visited the campus.

This was back in 2006, so it was awhile ago. They now have 3 TLM's a week on campus there. Tues, Thurs and one Sunday.

There's only one non-diocesan affiliated non-seminary Trad Catholic college in the entire country and that's St. Mary's.

The other diocesan Trad universities are this, Northeast Catholic in New Hampshire and Ave Maria in South Florida.

But they only offer one course of study and are only a 2 year college, which does not count if you want to be a professional of any kind.

I'm sure the students get an excellent liberal arts education but unfortunately in today's world the 2 year limit makes St. Mary's a dead end.  Not to mention the 13K+ in expenses each year just to go there.  Their website states there is no financial aid available, neither public nor private.  I'm glad they don't take public funds but I'm sorry they do not have a scholarship fund.

I suspect that not all the credits are transferable, plus the students who do want to transfer to a 4 yr school will not have all the prerequisites that secular schools require.  Although intellectually ahead of the pack,  St. Mary's grads may have to spend extra semesters ($$$) at a secular school to make up the prereqs.

Traditional Catholics are really at a disadvantage in the educational realm these days.

  • St. Mary's is good if you intend to teach at Society schools and only Society schools.

I would say to Trads: bite the bullet and go to a public college. You can avoid/substitute a lot of the overly liberal classes in the general requirements and get out with minimal, if any, debt.

  • It is a travesty that there are not quality schools for our young people to attend.  We NEED good truly Catholic accountants, biologists, archaeologists, dentists, teachers etc.

I think that one of the ways we lost control of the culture was through the infiltration of our educational system by progressives, we need to take it back the same way, by re-infiltrating the system.
