  • Not sure where to put this subject matter -- Wonders/Glories/Beauties of Science/God's Creation which is obviously fairly open ended.  Here's an interesting one for starters.  I'm 5'10 and if what I see on this entry is true I just found out how fast it would seem like I was moving if I was as small as one of these little critters, but with the ability to fly as fast as they do.  Amazing!

Often considered pests for the bites that many inflict, they are among the world’s largest true flies. They are known to be extremely noisy during flight. They are also important pollinators of flowers, especially in South Africa. Tabanids occur worldwide, being absent only at extreme northern and southern latitudes. Flies of this type are among those known sometimes as gadflies, zimbs or clegs. In Australia, they are known as “march flies”; elsewhere this term refers to the unrelated dipteran family Bibionidae.

  • How does an animal estimate perceived speed?
Does he even consider what he feels?
Sounds a bit wacky to me.

  • This website is based on the philosophy of Thomas Nagle who wrote in The Last Word,  "I want atheism to be true and am made uneasy by the fact that some of the most intelligent and well-informed people I know are religious believers. It isn't just that I don't believe in God and, naturally, hope that I'm right in my belief. It’s that I hope there is no God! I don’t want there to be a God; I don’t want the universe to be like that."[22]

    No wonder it sounds wacky!

Nadir, you may have lost me.  I was just making what I thought was a sort of amazing comparison.  In no way was I even considering any possibility of one of these little creatures having any perception of speed, at least in any way comparable to our perception of speed.  It was just my sense of amazement of how fast they can travel by their own God given characteristics as compared to how fast our legs can carry us and how amazing it would be to travel on our own at such relatively much faster speeds.  At various times in my life I've sometimes pondered at what relative speed they would be going at if they were as big as us.  When I came across this website I finally found out!  That's all.  I had no thoughts of evolution, atheism, etc. whatsoever.

I was sorry to find out from you that the website is based on the philosophy of some atheist, although I still haven't looked into it anymore to figure out that connection, if indeed there is one.

    Welcome to CI, Always.

Yes, God’s creation is full of wonders for us to ponder. My point is that although you don’t consider these creature capable of perception, the article does engage in anthropomorphising. Well, that’s how I perceive it, anyway. I clicked on the link aboutthissite on the bottom left of page and discovered Thomas Nagle, so I decided to check him out.

I too had no thoughts of evolution or atheism, and I did not suspect you did. It appears that Nagle is still living and is 85 years old. I pray that before he departs this life he will be granted the grace of conversion. You see if he doesn’t know God then whatever he knows is just so much straw.

At least Nagle admits what we all know to be true.  Reason demonstrates that there is a God, but the atheist simply doesn't want to believe it.
