  • [I speak as a man, so I'll speak here of women. Of course similar things could be said of men as well.]

I can't help but notice that many traditionalist women seem to let themselves go physically. (In fact, there's an interesting gradation I've noticed: the most beautiful women are at Novus Ordo Masses, there are fewer at FSSP Masses, and even fewer at SSPX Masses.) I see lots of fat bodies and haggard faces at Mass, not to mention frumpy attire.

Who can explain it? Are they using childbearing as an excuse to let themselves go? Yet we know that mothers need not become fat. Do they think that, as traditionalists, the likelihood of divorce is slim, therefore they can more safely let themselves go? Are they unaware that modest attire need not be frumpy? Who can explain it?

  • I have observed this too, to some degree.

Many years ago, while visiting at St. Mary's, I heard - in person - a sermon by Fr. Angles in which he took to task the women who wore make-up and such.  He said it was pure vanity and sinful.  Personally, I don't see something wrong with wearing a little mascara and lip gloss, particularly for an evening with your husband.

As for the weight issue, not sure.  I have seen all shapes and sizes at chapels.

  • Maybe they are on their knees so much in prayer that they aren't burning many calories.   :scratchchin: They are also rocking babies, often homeschooling their children and too busy with other household tasks to go to the gym or go jogging around the neighborhood.

They are also probably good cooks, making lots of yummy food and having to taste test, you know.   :ready-to-eat:  Would you rather be married to someone who could cook a great roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and apple pie for dessert or would you rather be married to a woman who worried so much about her weight that she wouldn't cook a good meal?

I think you may need to look a little further though since I've been to quite a few traditional Catholic parishes and I don't see many women who have "let themselves go".  There are many beautiful women, inside and out and a lot of them look younger than their ages.  I can think of some moms of 8 children or more that still look very young.

  • I think much of it has to do with the way people treat each other.  Those who are more devout and (consequently?) less popular tend to have more difficulties with that.

I can tell you there's nothing like encouragement from people to improve your attitude and help you to improve your physical condition.

For example: when you have pretty girls paying attention to you you end up riding your bicycle 25 miles a day to get into shape . . . you have a lot of motivation when you have things to look forward to.

When you realize people are going to reject you - then you start to put on weight.

  • A lot of traditional Catholic families are poor.  So am I and my family.  It is one of those paradoxes of modern agriculture that poor people eat high-fat, high-calorie foods, because they are the cheapest.  (It's the difference between McDonald's and Wendys.)  As a consequence, poor people can become really fat.

In addition, with large families there is not a lot of time for exercising, and intensive exercising can burn lots of calories.  However, exercising takes time, and large families do not have a lot of "extra time" on their hands.

One way to lose weight, in addition to eating very healthy, is to drink ice-cold water.  Drinking 64 to 80 ounces of water per day at 0 degrees Celsius will burn 100 additional food calories.  (Your body will need to raise that water to 37.5 degrees Celsius, unless you are peeing-out ice water, in which case you have other problems!)  A pound of fat is 3500 calories.  Running a marathon (26.2 miles) will only burn 2400 calories.  I found that fasting helps a lot.  The experts say not to "skip meals," but it does work if you stay active.  Climbing stairs is an excellent way to burn calories.  If you have stairs in your home and you climb them 20 times a day, then you have climbed 160 feet or more (20 times 8 feet) in one day.  For instance, if you are an 80 kg person, you will burn 80 kg * 10 m/s^2 * 2 meters = 1600 Joules climbing one flight of stairs, which is equal to 6720 physical calories, which is equal to 6.7 food calories.  Climb those stairs 10 times a day, and you will have burned at least 60 to 70 calories.

I disagree. I think that the overwhelming majority of poor people eat such food because they literally don't know how to eat right. And they don't know how to eat right because they've been raised on junk "food." This is actually true of many people today, rich, poor, and in between.

Who cares?  According to you, 99.99% of NOs, 95% of FSSP-ers, and 92% of SSPX-ers are going to hell!  LOL!

Seriously, modern life is hard, and getting harder.  I cannot imagine what it is like to be responsible for little ones in such an insane era.

It's definitely the opposite around here.  The NO is pervaded with an air of decrepitude.  The indult mass has some young families, but generally speaking, it's old and out of shape people.

The SSPX chapel appears to have some life and vitality to it.

Maybe I should try the sede chapel here.

This reminds me of something I've always heard from other guys. Some complain women dress too immodestly at Mass and that they may be an occasion of sin, or at least a distraction. I wish I could tell them to go to the Chapels of which you speak, so that they can be relieved of their scruples.  :laugh1:

Seriously though, you are not the first to say such a thing. I do not agree. I have heard similar things before, but all I can respond to such observations [and to the aforementioned complaints] is: "Why would you look at anything else other than the Altar or your Missal or the Priest at Mass?"

    But that's just me.
Please ignore all that I have written regarding sedevacantism.

Please. Because I'm a fallen human. Don't tell me you don't notice the women at every Mass.

  • We all have peripheral vision.  Habitually looking around is a different matter.

FWIW, noticing something does not necessarily mean we need to have a public discussion about it.

It is clear we are all dealing with the effects of fallen nature, but that is no excuse to cease fighting against them.  Stop looking around so much.

If you MUST get an answer to your query of great moment, why not show some manliness and ask the women about whom you are concerned?  Don't hide here and talk to us...ask the frumpy cows, face to face.  Let us know what they say in response.

  • Perhaps you should ask the frumpy cows about that, too...
