A lot of traditional Catholic families are poor. So am I and my family. It is one of those paradoxes of modern agriculture that poor people eat high-fat, high-calorie foods, because they are the cheapest. (It's the difference between McDonald's and Wendys.) As a consequence, poor people can become really fat.
In addition, with large families there is not a lot of time for exercising, and intensive exercising can burn lots of calories. However, exercising takes time, and large families do not have a lot of "extra time" on their hands.
One way to lose weight, in addition to eating very healthy, is to drink ice-cold water. Drinking 64 to 80 ounces of water per day at 0 degrees Celsius will burn 100 additional food calories. (Your body will need to raise that water to 37.5 degrees Celsius, unless you are peeing-out ice water, in which case you have other problems!) A pound of fat is 3500 calories. Running a marathon (26.2 miles) will only burn 2400 calories. I found that fasting helps a lot. The experts say not to "skip meals," but it does work if you stay active. Climbing stairs is an excellent way to burn calories. If you have stairs in your home and you climb them 20 times a day, then you have climbed 160 feet or more (20 times 8 feet) in one day. For instance, if you are an 80 kg person, you will burn 80 kg * 10 m/s^2 * 2 meters = 1600 Joules climbing one flight of stairs, which is equal to 6720 physical calories, which is equal to 6.7 food calories. Climb those stairs 10 times a day, and you will have burned at least 60 to 70 calories.
