Title: Which catechism do you use?
Post by: moneil on October 09, 2023, 12:33:47 PM
I thought it would be interesting to see what catechisms people us, and the ‘yung uns’ here might be introduced to some pre VII catechisms they were unaware of.  Some may use more than one, so the one primarily used for reference or to prepare someone for First Communion and Confirmation would be a good response.

The ones listed are (to my knowledge) the ones most commonly available in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries before VII, though there may be others.  Many are available in reprint but all of my copies were published pre VII and found in used bookshops.  I also included the Roman Catechism (Catechism of the Council of Trent for Parish Priests edited by St. Charles Borromeo, 1566) and The Compendium of Christian Doctrine (also known as the Catechism of Pope St.  Pius X originally prepared for use in Italy), though I don’t know how well known or available in English they were back then.  There are pre VII English catechisms for use in Great Britain and the Commonwealth, and others used in North America before the ones I’ve listed.  As I’m not very familiar with them I didn’t include them, other catechism can be mentioned in the comments.

I examine several, but one that is recommended by Traditional Catholic priests I know (exSSPXers) is the so named Spirago Catechism (Fr C. Spirago) is the one I use and forward to others the most.

I like the "My Catholic Faith" by Morrow.  It contains a piece about Baptism of Desire, but that is common in many of the catechisms.

I typically send people the Penny Catechism since it contains no errors nor ambiguities concerning EENS. However I think Baltimore is pretty good if you omit that one question about prots being saved by being united to the soul of the Church.

Here in Ireland, the Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, approved by the Archbishop and bishops of Ireland 1951 has 103 pages, and covers 443 questions and answers.

It begins with 12 pages of prayers, from The Sign of the Cross to the five mysteries of the rosary.
Then comes 89 pages of Q&A from
Q!: Who made the World
A. God made the world
To :
Q443, Which are the principle ceremonies:
A:The principle ceremonies are the Mass and the sacraments,
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament,
the reception and profession of religious sacred processions, and the burying of the dead.

Such was my dear wife's (RIP) love of this catechism, and the loss of it in modern times, that she had 1000 printed to be sold to cover her expenses. Requests came from all over Ireland for this catechism from parents and grandparents for their children that all 1000 were gone just after she died. I decided to continue her apostolate and got another 1000 printed. I now get requests from people who remember it in their youth, a catechism that makes armature theologians out of readers by way of Q&A.

I catechized myself when I converted to Tradition with the My Catholic Faith catechism. This is also the one that the SSPX parish I attend provides to adult converts to my knowledge. I love this catechism and where others (Spirago, Trent) can be a tedious read, the structure of My Catholic Faith and the great illustrations make it perfect for a convert who is attracted by the beauty of the Latin Mass and Catholic faith.

I did a web search and came up with 4 different publications. Can you give me more information on which one it is. Thank you.

The version printed and sold by Angelus Press is the one I own! It’s a super nice copy and well worth the price.

We used the Baltimore Catechism #2 and #3 in our homeschool (Grades 6 through 10) and are now using the Fr Laux series (which isn't strictly speaking a "catechism").  We also have My Catholic Faith and Faith of Our Fathers as ancillary references.

Gaume Catechism of Perseverance
Farber's Catechism
Fr. Athanasius Urban Sunday School Teacher's aids
Irish Maynooth Catechism that someone mentioned before from 1951
Msgr Stockman's High School Catechism
And A Manual of Religious Instruction by Provost Wenham
Fr. Schouppe and My Catholic Faith sometimes
I have mentioned multiple catechisms because they are good on various topics, some not so good on other topics, and I combine data from many.

But if I have to look anything up I first go to Trent or Perseverance because it's almost always there.
