  • An anecdote I wanted to share --

Our oldest two are 5 1/2 and 4 -- exactly 17 months apart. The oldest is a boy (Dominic) and the oldest girl is Miriam.

Tonight Dominic ate 3/4 of a personal cheese pizza from Chilis, plus a whole order of fries, plus a bunch of chips & salsa -- not to mention 1 1/2 glasses of orange juice.

Miriam ate 1/4 of a pizza, 1 glass of chocolate milk, some chips & salsa, and she was complaining tonight about being stuffed, like she ate too much!

It's funny -- she eats almost less than our 2 year old, while Dominic eats almost as much (sometimes more) than I do!

One of those things that surprised me about fatherhood -- how much kids can eat! ...and how it changes from month to month based on who's growing.

  • Better watch out or your boy will get chubby.  Or maybe he's making up for not eating enough at home?

  • He'll eat as much at home depending on what is being served, but thankfully it's more balanced than pizza and fries. Taking the kids out for dinner is a rare occurrence, so tonight we let them pick whatever they wanted. If their food hadn't been free, they would have been dropped off at Grandma's house.  :smirk:

Wait until you have teenage boys. It is amazing how much they can put away. Ian is 6'2 and not even 150 lbs and I swear both of his legs are hollow...or he has a tapeworm :laugh2:
No one would believe how much Lucy eats since she looks like a stiff wind would blow her over.

  • I remember when I was in 4th grade, at lunch time all the kids had a little lunch box in which they had either a simple sandwich or one of those stupid little "Lunchables" packs. I remember my first day of class when I placed slammed my ice chest on the table. Everyone had this look on their face >   . They got used to the sight eventually.  :laugh1:

  • Yes, Matthew it is amazing.  All of our children have different appetites and eating styles.  They all have different body types also.  When our oldest, who is 19, was 3, he would eat so much I thought he might get sick.  One evening we had eggplant parmesan and the child ate 3 servings!

Our #4 son is 5.  He is always first to come to the dinner table and always the last to leave.  He's a big rice eater. He likes steak too.   :laugh1:

Our soon-to-be 3 year old daughter loves veggies and if you don't quickly serve yourself, she will help herself to the entire bowl of whatever veggie we have, especially broccoli.

Our oldest daughter, who is 7, used to eat huge amounts of food, but now, not so much.  She also is averse to milk and butter, but she likes cheese.

Meal time can be quite confusing, as we have some who don't like to eat meat, some who don't like legumes, some who don't like green vegetables, some who don't like dairy...Ugh.

But yes it is truly amazing how much children will eat.

In my experience, don't worry too much about them becoming overweight or nutritionally deficient.  When our #3 son was 5, he would only eat hot dogs or wheaties.  That was it.  When I took him to the Dr. for a check-up the Dr. (who was really old school) laughed it off.  We had never experienced this before, and he assured me it would pass with no adverse effects.  It was true.

Kids! That is true about boy's! MY brother ate like a bottom less pit and he is so thin, that when he went to basic, they made him first in line! My 2 yr old eats the exact same way, he eats more than I do! He gets healthy foods, but once in while I take him out for Family night and he is free :) So I just pay for me :) Grandmas is a good idea! My parents live almost 4 hours away! :(
