What to do? Home Improvement Loan?

  • I have been slowly cleaning the house since my cat died. I plan to get 1 or 2 kittens. I have a dilemma. My carpet cleaner is not that old and quit working because this carpet cleaner like many other things are made so cheap these days.

I tried to find the best quality carpet cleaner for about $300 and it still was not good enough. To top it off, I found out in my research, carpet is an unhealthy choice for pets and humans.

Should I buy another carpet cleaner in hopes it last much longer than the one I have or should I take out a loan and have about 900+ square feet of porcelain tile installed so I can get rid of the unhealthy carpet.

I been praying the novena to the Holy Ghost all week for guidance on what to do with my life and now I can't even get my carpets cleaned.  :sign-surrender:

  • If you buy tile, who is installing?  Better get a heavy duty tile, not the thin ones from Lowes or Home Depot.  Be sure the grout is dark with color, for grout will get dark eventually.

I plan to get  good quality tile. I just don't want to buy another carpet cleaner if it won't last long and I also do not know if God would want me taking out a loan for tile. I need a healthy floor and the carpet is not working. I have to get it cleaned.

This is the tile I want to get.

  • I wouldn't take out a loan for something that small.  Better plan is to find a way to deal with your carpet, and keep it clean, until you can save the money to install the tile.  Get some side jobs and pay with cash.

Also, you might save some money on install if you find someone at your church or a friend of a friend who would be willing to give you a deal, rather than pay full price for an established business.  On the other hand, you don't want to hurt your home's value (I assume you own this residence) by a sub par install job.

Have you thought about wood laminate flooring?  There are some varieties that are very scratch resistant and good for animals.  Might be cheaper than installing tile, especially for that large of an area.

  • I think you are young and unmarried by the sound of it, as you said "I been praying the novena to the Holy Ghost all week for guidance on what to do with my life". Is this your own home? What is under the carpet? I would advise not getting into debt. Why not buy a better quality carpet cleaner?

  • Nadir asked a good question - what is under the carpet?  If hardwood, that's the best short term option  (get someone to refinish for you with a rental - be sure they are handy)

If not hardwood, then here's a DIY carpet cleaner:  http://lifehacker.com/banish-stains-with-this-diy-carpet-cleaner-1507583048   - until you can save enough money to pay cash for tile.
We have had cat/dog rescues and fostering for years - tile or hardwood is the way to go for sure.
