What do SSPXers do for work?

  • I am a U.S. Army veteran with a 4 year business degree and a minor in accounting. Since January, I have been looking for employment. Of the 50-60 applications I have put in, I have gotten a mere 4 interviews. The highest paying job that I interviewed for was only $18.50/hour which I would be happy with at this point. The next highest was $13.50/hour. I believe I should have gotten this job since my job in the army gave me 4.5 years of experience in the same field plus I have a degree. But I didn't get the job.

I landed a job with the Home Depot (A Jєω company). I am thankful for the job, however, I remain unsatisfied since the wages are low and I am pretty much on the bottom of the totem pole. I can understand, to some extent, being new and all, as to why I am on the bottom. And yes, I am sick of being on the bottom since that has always been where I have been. I have never made more than $10/hour in the civilian world while doing low end jobs.

I am beginning to realize that it has a lot to do with who you know. Like I said, one of my interviews was for a job that I believe I should have gotten hands down. I can only imagine that I didn't get the job because the interviewer knew someone that he wanted to give the job to.

So how do you all make a living? Especially since you come to a website that is against civil rights, and there is a high potential for people spying on you. You don't need to name your place of work, I am just wondering more about what you do and if you are able to make a decent salary or not. Maybe many of you are in the same boat as me. I know I am sick and tired of it. how about you?

  • If you are in good health maybe you could drive truck. Depending on where you live you could be home everyday and make 40 to 65k per yr. If you could stay out longer and specialized you could make much more.

  • I agree with the idea of driving a truck. Long and unpredictable hours but you could potentially make 75K being a company driver and I imagine much more being an owner operator, if you have the right business mind.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

I did talk with a trucking company about a month and a half ago. He told me it would start at about $40k/year. I am still contemplating this idea, but if I am ever to start a family, I can't see how I could continue doing this line of work. I suppose it could be  good short term venue. But thats about it.

My goal in life is to be able to make enough money so that I can raise a family. Thats really all i care about.

  • I think we should be able to expand this informal poll to ALL traditional Catholic men, don't you think?

I don't think the SSPX, Recognize & Resist, the status of the Pope, etc. has anything to do with this topic.

    It's a great topic though.

I make a living through several part-time jobs. My main job (which is a home business) is web development.

It seems like patching together several income streams to "make a go of it" is the wave of the future.

I can't even say my whole living comes from the present. I'm very much living off past work I did. The house I'm living in would cost more than I have right now, if it weren't for the fact that I *used to* make much more, and I used all that excess all to pay down the mortgage.

We're also living off old cars that are paid off. That kind of thing.

It's easier to spend less and do without when you've spent several years of your life making a bit more, and collecting various equipment you'll need later.

  • As a vet you are entitled to preferential hiring with the Federal government if you are so inclined to work for them.  I would not recommend it as a career but you could get 4 or 5 years of useful experience that would transfer to the private sector.  It can be a good starting point and they do pay for education.  If you want to progress anywhere in the corporate world (as opposed to having your own business) you will need an MBA.

here are two links to get you started.

With an accounting background you might make more working at H&R Block during the tax season than at Home Despot.  I have a friend who worked for H&R for four years then went into business for herself and is doing quite well.  H&R does the most thorough training of all the common tax services.

Work the vet angle first though, you should have lots of doors open for you because of your service, for which I thank you.

You would start out working more hours making less money. Within a year or to you should be able to get a driving job working less hours and making more. In my area I know several people averaging between $18 and 24$ per hour working between 40 to 60 hours a week. If I was willing to stay out for a week at a time I could have an easy job making 80k. If I was willing to work longer days I could make 65 to 70k a year easy. I have many friends who do this, they live at home not on the road. You just have to be willing to work crap jobs for a year until you have some experience.
As a veteran a 10 to 14 hr work day shouldn't be too hard. Whatever you do confidence is key. Be sure of yourself but not full of yourself.

  • One thing that may help you in your job search is to make sure your resume and cover letters are absolutely perfect, and that you know how to interview.  You may be very qualified for a job, but if you can't get past these initial hurdles, you won't be offered employment.

Many people are looking for work, and a resume that contains misspelling or is formatted improperly may immediately go into the trash can.  Also, make sure you know how to conduct yourself in an interview.  My husband is a very personable man, but he realized that he was terrible at interviewing when he was looking for work.  He would slouch, speak informally, and say the wrong things (for example, he would ask about the employer's vacation policy; that is a fine thing to ask once you are offered the job, but not during the interview).  Once he realized this, he corrected his mistakes and landed a job.

I'm not saying you have these issues, but it is at least something to consider.

Splendid advice! Everything you say is 100 percent true.

When I worked for a New York reference book publisher, unsolicited résumés came in with annoying regularity. As soon as I saw a single formatting or spelling error, into the bin the rezzy went. This may sound harsh, but it isn't. For someone who is looking for work as a copy editor or proofreader, such errors amount to wearing a Don't Hire Me sign. Being addressed by my first name in a cover letter when I hadn't given permission to do so, especially when the offender was twenty or thirty years my junior, was also a kiss of death.

The thing I hated most was a résumé where its writer referred to something other than the weather as "cool." One day, when my boss and I were chatting about how low the quality of work produced by those in our racket had sunk, I told him about my aversion to people who thought "cool" was a suitable word for a formal docuмent. For a moment he got quite stern and said, "Don't forget that there are certain sectors of children's publishing where a person who writes a résumé like that would be just the man or woman for the job." Then his face softened and he said, "And I thank God every day that I am not in one of those sectors."

I was chosen for a scholarship job proofreading a college newspaper because I was the only applicant who corrected the mistakes (I think there was more than one) on the application.

Unfortunately, the mistakes were still there the next year when I reapplied.

  • Infinite Faith,

My advice is to work - no matter what.  It may sound silly but any job - even a fast food job - would be a good start.

It's my own opinion that employers appreciate someone showing the willingness to work.

  • Yes, you must have excellent interviewing skills and a razor sharp resume.

In my former life I was a technical recruiter for GTE.  We would read 200+ resumes, do phone interviews w/15, invite 5 for onsite interviews and hire ONE!

In my area Goodwill Industries helps people, free of charge, with resume writing and interview skills.

I hope you are haunting employment sites link, one not listed there is jobing dot com.

So many people are unemployed now that an applicant really has to stand out to be given a chance.  Be willing to relocate, even at your own expense.  Be flexible.  Learn about the company you are interviewing with so you can ask intelligent questions about their overall operation, not just the department you are interviewing with.

Give some deep thought to your strengths and weaknesses.  Know what you can bring to the company, be prepared to explain why YOU would be an asset to them, not in a boasting manner, but just be matter of fact.  Employers like people who are confident but not pushy.

    Here's another vet site: link

Do a Google search on help for vets finding jobs and you'll come up with a long list of sites.

Please keep us posted on your progress.
