  • I've heard that some SSPX priests recommend conditional confirmation for anyone who was confirmed after around 1970, or in the NO.  I've also been told by other SSPX priests that it's only recommended if there's reason to doubt the form or matter of the original confirmation.  What do you think?
What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?

  • I think they should be done.  There are too many questions unresolved about the validity of the rite used to consecrate Bishops.

While I agree with Marsha, I have to wonder how the SSPX can justify it given the fact that they fully accept the validity of the Novus Ordo sacraments including the consecration of Novus Ordo bishops.

  • It's a great idea, and very necessary.  Many Novus Ordo sacraments are doubtful, and many different things contribute to the doubt.  In something like confirmation, it's not as simple as just verifying matter and form.  What about minister?  A lot of times, the Novus Ordo priest will perform the rite.  Even if the matter and form used for confirmation (inasmuch as the oils are concerned) can be verified, what about the minister?  Is the "bishop" really a bishop?  The "priest" really a priest?  Does the "bishop" delegating the duty to the priest really have the authority to do so?  Was the bishop who consecrated the oils actually a bishop?  So on and so forth.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

My impression is that they don't have a united stand on this particular issue (as well as others).  That's fine with me, and I don't blame them, but it's partly why I'm confused.  At my chapel they recommend it, but do not in any way try to argue that it's absolutely necessary.

  • No harm in having a conditional confirmation.

Considering the 1970's in the novus ordo, and afterwards, having doubts about the validity of the novus ordo sacraments is a perfectly reasonable conclusion.

Even if the changes to the rites of consecration and ordination were insignificant, the ulterior purpose was to create doubt in the mind of the believer.  I think this can hardly be argued against.
