I'm surprised I hadn't heard about this since it's a local story...

Short version:

18-year-old in TX is "talking trash" with friends on Facebook.
In response to being called crazy, he says, "I'm *** in the head alright, I think I'ma shoot up a kindergarten." Two similar comments follow.
Unknown person in CANADA sees his comments, views his location as listed on Facebook, and reports him to local police in TX.
TX police find that address listed on his Driver's License is within 100 yards of an elementary school in Austin. They proceed to find him at work (in San Antonio) and arrest him. They search his home (in New Braunfels) and find no evidence that he is a danger to anyone.
Nonetheless, his bail is set at half a million dollars and he faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
He spends 4 months in jail until an anonymous person posts his bail. During that time, he is sɛҳuąƖly assulted and then put on ѕυιcιdє watch due to his depression.
At this point, if he agrees to plead guilty to a felony, he can serve 10 years probation instead.

This happened a year ago and the charges still haven't been dropped.

Yet another reason to keep your family away from Facebook? If this guy had been anonymous, they might not have bothered to track him down, but he made it all too easy for them.

If you threaten to kill people you deserve what you get.

The only thing that gets me about this is that all the threats I have seen on Youtube posted by muslims seem to be ignored. But that could be because it is a great source of intel for the govt.

People get far worse in many countries just for saying that they think their president or leader is corrupt.

Americans are prone to massive over-reaction with these sorts of stupid puerile outbursts and lack mental balance and perspective to deal with what could have been dealt with by a short sharp shock.  That said, the offending male was an American and should have know what the ground rules were.  I would never make a sarcastic joke to an immigration, customs or law enforcement official when visiting the US because I know they don't like that. I behave maturely and respectfully around such people.

I think more maturity is needed by this idiot, the prosecution and the people who are supposed to have control in prison as well as the laws and politicians who govern them.  We know society is uptight about this stuff, so DON'T JOKE ABOUT IT.

What is needed is more billy sticks and for 18 year old punks and prisoner rapists to get a good crack around the head when they break the rules.  Pain is a great teacher.  But to have that return we would need to have first world countries where we mostly agreed on a common set of values.

Truth is, in the past punks like this idiot were put into place by older men be they teachers at school, drill sergeants or cops.  Those that turned into John Dillinger were shot dead.

I have seen lots of crazy stuff posted on Face Book. yakking about their
personal lives, and stuff that no one needs to know. Once on Facebook,
it is immediately picked up by NSA and other spy groups. And will
be used against you if you are considered a political dissident and a
terrorist.
