  • Here is a highly recommended book:

(The referral link is already embedded. Just click, add to cart, and check out!)

My friend discovered Sepp Holzer -- the man has mastered just about every aspect of agriculture. He is able to grow produce year-round high in the Alps! He is a permaculture genius.

I'm about to buy this book, and I figure maybe a few other CathInfo members would be interested as well.

  • I like that there're some old varieties recommended in there.

Reminds me of something I'd find on the Homesteading Today forums! :D

    Sincerely,

  • I watched some videos of his -- he is incredible.

He creates a Garden of Eden using any kind of soil -- he understands every nuance of how to create an ideal growing environment. He understands soil, erosion, water, temperature, humidity, symbiotic relationships, the food chain --

If agriculture were music, this man would be Mozart.

He's my hero when it comes to gardening.

  • Looks wonderful.  Many thanks for the info!  I got some dynamite soil from composting with worms.  If I'd only kept the roots of the tomatoes warm! :farmer:

  • Oh, and by the way my Mozart analogy was quite apt --

He said that he learned everything he knows by "observing nature". He started at age 7 planting a garden and observing Nature taking its course (!)

As if any of us could do that...

He's some kind of child prodigy that grew up into a genius.

Seriously, watching this guy gives me some idea what ancient Man was like -- understanding things deeply and mastering his world, as opposed to modern man who is nothing without an Internet connection and access to Google.

  • I got my copy of the book -- WOW is it awesome; I've already learned a lot. I was worried that a lot of it wouldn't apply to my specific circuмstances.

But I've already learned MANY good principles that will help me succeed in my orchard, garden, etc. in the future. Well worth the $17.

And I was surprised that the book had *lots* of full color photos scattered throughout. It has some pictures of various "wild plants" that indicate different things about your soil (nitrogen rich, nitrogen poor, acidic, etc.), it has some lists at the end about what garden plants do well together, etc.

I'm already on page 60, and I'm reading it as fast as I can! :)
