I'm perplexed about how they got away with it.

In one sense, the Conciliar Church stole all these beautiful things from the Catholic Church, putting them to use in a Protestant service (when they didn't just sell them outright or throw them in the garbage) ... so now perhaps they know what it's like to feel the Church dispossessed of her treasures.  Thank God that the NOM is almost certainly invalid.

Inside job?  Maybe to get money to pay someone off?  

The security footage was taken as well.  Who would know where that footage was in the first place?

Probably just stating the obvious, but something like that would be impossible to sell intact.  They'd have to melt it down and make it into ingots.
