  • Bishop Williamson's column -
    (July 24, 2010) :  "UNIVERSITY" WASTELAND.

Several years ago when I wrote
that girls should not go to university, a number of readers were
    shocked.
But when I listen today to a young Professor who recently spent six
years teaching English Literature in an English "university" (not

the same thing as a true university!), it seems I should add that boys
should not go either. Or they should at least think very hard
before going, and their parents should think very hard before
shelling out the expensive fees. Here, in order, is what the Professor
observed, what he sees as its causes, and what he sees as its remedies.
    In the "university"
where he taught, he observed no pursuit of truth nor education for
    truth.
"Language is a game independent of reality, producing its own artefacts.

The students are made to feel that everything is relative, there are
no standards, values, nor moral framework nor moral reference. The
    sciences
are infected with an evolutionism which opposes "science" to religion.
The "Humanities" are degraded by a Freudian interpretation making
everything centre on s-x. Professors tell students to have a s-x life
because "it is good for them". These "universities" advertize
their night life, and almost praise the sin against nature. They are
    utterly s-xualized.
    "As for the professors, many
recognize that there is a deep-down problem, but many continue to play
the game. They are all Marxizing, if not Marxists. They teach as though
all authority is stifling, all tradition oppressive. Evolution rules.
As for the students, many more of them than one would think are yearning

for something, but they are no longer looking to their "university"
for truth. If they want a "Degree", it is only to get a job, and
if they seek a good "Degree", it is only to get a better-paying
job.  Rarely will they discuss ideas."
So what are the CAUSES of the
university being turned into such a purely utilitarian processor of
information to serve the established system ?  The Professor says,
" The basic cause is the loss of God, resulting from several centuries
of war on the Incarnation. Then education no longer means providing
a truth or morality to live by, but rather developing one's potential
to be different and better than anyone else. Into the vacuum left by
Truth moves pop culture and the Frankfurt School, with their liberation
from all authority. Into the vacuum left by God moves the State, which
sees "universities" as a source of technocrats and engineers. Absolutes
are of no interest, except one: absolute skepticism."
    As for the REMEDIES  the
Professor says, "These "universities" can hardly get out of the
trap they have fallen into. To learn something genuinely useful a boy
is better off at home, or talking to priests or going on a Retreat.
Faithful Catholics must do things for themselves, and band together
to re-build institutions of their own, starting maybe with summer
    schools.
The Humanities must be restored, because they deal with the basics of
human existence, what is right, good and true. The natural sciences,
specific and derivative, must remain secondary. They cannot take
    priority
of the Humanities. Let parents send their boys to these "universities"
to get a job, but not to learn anything truly useful."
"The loss of God" - all is said.
    Kyrie eleison.

    Correct again, Bishop Williamson.

I visited various colleges in Virginia before eventually choosing one in particular (with a humanities-centered curriculum, but not less sɛҳuąƖized) and some of the colleges had nothing to say about their degree programs.  They were entirely concerned with "fun fun fun."  The films they produced for visitors followed a young ethnic student on a typical day, which consisted of flag football in the quad, playing instruments with some girl, and a few words about his hopes for the future.

You pay a ton of money to get a piece of paper produced by the University so you can earn more pieces of paper produced by the Government.  Our entire society seems to be enthralled with paper, oddly...

  • Even if the things which Bishop Williamson mentions above are not explicit, they are there implicitly.
    Pray for me, always.

  • I guess we are lucky we could never afford university! A blessing in disguise, although I didn't really need Bishop Williamson's letters to know that. All you really need is to be Facebook friends with other trads who are in university. Yikes! I had enough trouble as an 18 year old, just learning to interact with my peers in town and keep my Faith, much less go away from home to university. I have one sister who became an LPN and her Faith took a hit at the time, but it looks like that was God's Providence for the order of sisters she may be joining now. Other than that, the boys took on trades and I plan on the same for my little man.

  • Having been to college, I understand how immoral, etc. it is but how does one make enough money to survive without it?

I can't even find a decent job with a college degree, an almost perfect GPA, and work experience so I can't even imagine what it is like for people who have only graduated high school. At this rate, I think I'm going to have to end up getting more school because I can't afford basic needs each month.

I think these ideas are great, in theory, and work for a select few but on the whole, I really don't see how it's feasible.

  • College is for chumps, that's for sure. I was a chump and went, and regret it all aside from meeting my future wife!    :dancing:

Doing what I'm doing now, I could have truly side-stepped all the hoops of coursework, and had real world experience to get all the certifications and training I need for my current field of work and the prospective one I plan to go into. A degree does show some ability to work in the confines of the classroom and a future employer's workplace possibly, but it doesn't show personal worth. I could have taken all my classes online from my public state school, without having stepped foot on the soil of that sɛҳuąƖized-liberal-ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖapproving-demon ridden land of my college, and got the diploma. All the friends I met and made there are gone now, pretty much every connection destroyed or let to waste away... word of advice to anyone who is just becoming Catholic while in college... just graduate and get out while you can.

While you could have just started in your current job instead of going to college, you cannot support yourself on the salary that it pays. You need a higher paying job which usually requires a degree in the field or tons of experience. Most jobs that will just take a person who only has a high school diploma do not pay well and will not allow you provide for yourself, let alone a family.

So again, how does one bypass college and still have the ability to provide comfortably for a family? Especially today when people with higher education are taking the lower jobs because they can't find anything else, how can someone who doesn't have college experience compete?

Well, one thing that helps is not having student loans to pay off. Also not having a college degree can mean that a person is not over-qualified for some humbler yet sustaining jobs. Some go into trade work instead. And some simply learn not to have high material "needs". There are ways to make it work.
