  • I was reading this earlier. A few months ago the man behind this project was considering bringing this to an end. He gets a poor response. Obviously we can't support every project but I always try to assist where possible.

I wrote this story about Umbert disguising himself as a bear and and being protected by eco-friendly elves ten years ago and I think it still holds up. I found the idea of the environmental left caring more about baby bears than baby humans irresistible, with all of its politically correct overtones. The frustrating part for me is that while Gary Trudeau gets to churn his ideological satire to an audience of millions, Gary Cangemi is relegated to preaching to the choir in faith based publications only.
The syndicates won't touch Umbert because they see it as too controversial. I even spoke on the phone with Jay Kennedy, the head of King Features and he was aghast when I mentioned the title of my strip, Umbert the Unborn.

The left leaning media are terrified at the very idea of my work. Perhaps that is why newspapers are dying. The problem is, how do I make a living creating Umbert for the internet.

The moment I post a cartoon on the net, it is essentially a freebie. I don't mind so much that people are reading and enjoying it but one does need to pay ones bills doing something. If anyone out there knows how to make a living at this internet thing, I'd welcome any suggestions.I'm a cartoonist, not a businessman. Have a great weekend.

Umbert has been in syndication to Catholic papers for 15 years, including the National Catholic Register. But it is a very small niche and readership has been dropping. I want to make an impact on the culture and compete for the hearts and minds of mainstream Americans. While I appreciate the warm response from the Christian community, political satire has always been my strong suit.
As for books, I have two Umbert books on the market but they are getting dated. Books will not sell well if there isn't already a large readership. My goal has always been to produce Umbert as a daily strip with storylines such as the one I posted this past week.

But I can't take the time to create a daily if there is no way to generate even a modest income. I wonder how many syndicated cartoonists are making money with newspapers folding and people getting their news from the internet. Thanks for the responses. I really appreciate it.
