Government's legal fight AGAINST the right to wear a cross at work brings accusations it is 'sidelining Christianity'By Brendan Carlin
    PUBLISHED: 01:08 GMT, 11 March 2012 | UPDATED: 11:15

Nadia Eweida claims she was discriminated against when her employers stopped her wearing a cross
The Government was last  night accused of ‘sidelining’ Christianity for preparing a legal fight against believers having the right to wear the cross at work.
In a move branded ‘extraordinary’ by Christian groups, the Government was reported to be ready to argue against two British women at the European Court of Human Rights.
It is set to defend the right of employers to ban the cross as it  is not a ‘requirement’ of the Christian faith to wear it. Bosses could then sack workers who insisted on wearing the symbol.
The move would potentially scupper the case being brought by two Christian women, Nadia Eweida and Shirley Chaplin, who claim they were discriminated against when their employers stopped them wearing crosses.
The Ministry of Justice was last night unavailable for comment, but Christian groups expressed their astonishment at the news.
Andrea Williams, the director of the Christian Legal Centre, said: ‘It is extraordinary that a Conservative Government  should argue that the wearing of the cross is not a generally recognised practice of the faith.’

  • Are they taking workers' shirts off to see if they wear a Cross?

If not, how do they know that they are wearing one?

Christians should not advertise their religion with material signs of faith.

Better to live by Christian principles in one's daily life.

Wear a scapular, don't show it off.

Thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.

Nonsense. Have you ever heard of the Kingship of Christ?
He should be worshipped openly and publicly.

  • The Mass is public worship.

    Hence the word "liturgy."

A Crucifix necklace is a sacramental.

  • So you would have no problem with them banning crucifixes in the workplace and schools, hospitals?

  • Issue is wearing a Crucifix necklace for show.

Issue is not Catholic institutions displaying Crucifixes in their own buildings.

  • Well where do you think they are going with this? You think if they get away with banning the crucifix necklace they will stop there?

  • The issue appears to be an unnecessary display of a religious symbol in a nondenominational hospital.

I would also expect to not see religious symbols on the walls of a nondenominational hospital.

Issue here is that someone just wants to show off how holy holy she is.

Easy to wear scapulars and Crucifixes without anyone seeing.

Call me when Catholic institutions are forced to remove Catholic pictures and symbols.

  • I have something to say.

People have a right to express their faith in a free society.  No rational person, NO rational person, of any faith or no faith, could be rationally offended by someone wearing a cross.  That requires a level of malevolent stupidity that even most liberals are incapable of.  In a society in which religious freedom is regarded as a basic human right (I believe this is still the official position of the UK) it is very short trip from this silliness to telling clergy (Catholic, Anglican, Methodist or whatever) that they cannot wear clerical collars in public, or that  a nun or a Muslim woman can't wear a veil, or that a Jєω can't wear a yarmulke.  A society that wants us to believe that it is simply concerned about the rights of minority religions rather than overtly hostile to all religion should really want to back away from this.

  • Yeah, Lord Monckton said they made the Catholic adoption agencies shut down in the UK because they wouldn't let ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖs adopt. And of course the liberal, spineless NO bishops put up no fight whatsoever.

You're called a troll because of your behavior, nothing else.

Are other religious items banned?  Head scarves, yarmulkes, etc.?

  • Not in England, perhaps, but I believe they have been in France.
