I don't watch TV, but every now and then on my way to the kitchen, I stop to see what my little sister is watching. These are the two commercials I saw before moving on:

Why is your little sister watching this literal poison. It would not be a shame if your TV suddenly developed a serious case of terminal illness and simply died. Seriously, if YOU don't watch it, is there something you can do to discourage the other members of your family from killing their souls with it? I really encourage you to think about what YOU can do within your family to steer them away from such poison. My prayer intentions are headed in your direction.

No. I am the only Catholic and religious person in my family, and because of that, I am mostly viewed as a fool whose advice is worthless. I have tried telling my younger siblings to not watch TV, to go outside, and to spend their days naturally, but my words only ever amount to suggestions - I have no authority over them and I can't tell them what to do. My mother has instructed my younger siblings to listen to nobody but her, and they rarely even do that. Believe me, I would love nothing more than to take a hammer to the television set, and a number of other things.

It is a Charizard from the TV show Pokemon. Before joining, I noticed that many of the forum-goers here chose saints and theologians as their avatars, but I didn't want to do so myself because it might give people the impression that I am in some way holy or intelligent. So, by choosing a fictional fire-breathing dinosaur from a children's television show, I hoped to avoid giving off those impressions.
Also, Charizard is cool, and that's an impression I don't mind imparting on people :cool:

It's definitely a problem! But unbeknowns to you, your younger siblings must be observing you and may go your way in time. Meanwhile, give your Mum as much help as possible. Kindness, in spite of the difficulties, will not go unobserved by them. De-programming takes time, and Grace.

I am as resolved as ever to NOT subject my children to this kind of crap.
They don't need it. Ever. Not at age 5, and not at age 10.
And no, that won't be "sheltering them"...
But I guess you could say I shelter my children, if by "shelter" you mean I don't let them "experience" certain things such as: eating offal, swimming in a sewer, jumping off a bridge without any equipment...you get the idea.

Well, seeing as how I live in a non-religious family, their entire lives are devoted to pleasure. For example, my older brother spends all of his time watching movies, playing video games, and otherwise saturates himself in entertainment, day in and day out. He actively knows that he is becoming more stupid, lazy, and zombiefied, and yet he doesn't do anything about it. Why? Because he doesn't believe in God and has no purpose in life other than to make himself comfortable.
So, can I give them info on the physical and intellectual dangers of TV (which I do)? Yes, but it goes in one ear and out the other.

Good for you Alex! You are a great example to them, even if they appear not to listen, they do hear the message you are giving them. I'm sorry your mom is not supporting your good advice to them. I admire your courage!!!
