Trying to expand my music library

  • I love music. I love all sorts of music, ...or rather, I used to. Though my library is large, I wouldn't mind adding to it. It's all old. Not just 18th Century "old", but "music I've listened to for years"-old, and I'm seeking out something new.

I enjoy orchestral music, and after my upbringing and now my children's upbringing of classical music study, of course I'm going to be jamming to Liszt and just about anything "classical." Mom listened to the blues and jazz and anything Italian; my dad likes "marching band" (military and college band), so I have all of that. Somehow, after years of thinking otherwise, I've even picked up a taste for opera. My husband likes music from the 60s such as "Simon and Garfunkel" and "the Beatles" — gotta be real, it's not my thing, but I'll listen to it (sometimes through gritted teeth). (Some gets accidentally deleted.) There are a few genres I just can't with (bluegrass, particularly), but otherwise, I'm open to trying something new.

In a search for NEW (to me) music, I ran upon Charlotte Church and some "NewChurch" music which isn't that bad. Old songs, new singers. (NOT "new songs"; I'm not trying to hear "Jesus is my boyfriend" Novus Ordo music ANY day ever).

But I need to branch out. In college, I picked up some secular music but, to be quite frank, without roommates and parties, I'm not discovering my own music. So add "Pearl Jam" and that sort of old 90s band music, and you've got my iPod. Which is all I listen to because radio doesn't do much for me.

A few years ago, I heard band/orchestral Christmas music (probably in September, as that's when stores start blasting the Christmas music), and I heard Trans-Siberian Orchestra. LOVED it. Downloaded a few songs. And then today, I saw that TSO had non-Christmas music as well, so I downloaded it.

Does anyone know anything about this band? Because while the album was titled something about Beethoven, either I was punked into downloading fake TSO music, or these people are, how to say... zombies from Hell.

There are no Trad Catholic reviews of the band; everyone "loves" them. I know nothing about them. Does anyone from here have any thoughts on TSO? Is their stuff "Satanic"? And if so, is it bad enough that I shouldn't listen to their Christmas music anymore? It's plausible I'm completely being too critical of TSO and should give the songs with a good beat another chance. (Not the songs with singing, though.)

AND, while we're at it, are there other recent bands that are good? On FB, someone suggested a band called something like "Vitamin C String Quartet". Also, "Scala and the Kolcany Brothers" (not sure I'm spelling that right). I don't want any more "surprises" this week, so does anyone have suggestions of good music that is relatively "recent", that isn't something Hellhounds might enjoy?

Thank you. Yes, I'm THAT into music. BIG part of my life. And I'm not a composer. Just want to jazz up the old music library a bit; expand my horizons. Without going to Hell.
