Lol... I don't think most Mexican restaurants serve tofu.

Friday night dinner at a Mexican Restaurant, what are they going to eat, cheese enchiladas and tofu tacos?
There's a lot of seafood in Mexican cuisine because they have a ton of coastline and a lot of diversity. Now, if it's a Mexican restaurant run by palateless whites who think Texas Pete is spicy, then maybe they'll have tofu tacos. A real one would not. Especially in a country with such rich Catholic heritage like Mexico.
-
This looks like a great event and you guys have clearly done a lot of work getting it set up!
I pray there will be many marriages and babies forthcoming!!!

Now you ruined it for me too :laugh1:
Great job with the event <3

I'm breaking out of the stereotype myself. Despite the % being rather low, my upbringing (culture) was disproportionately Irish. Attitudes toward the world, education, truth, sense of humor, expressions, verbal banter, you name it. Perhaps we grew up as Irish kids because my dad was a strong influential figure, despite not being huge on discipline. But anyhow, our meals were VERY low-spice and bland growing up.
Today, I make a dish of queso and use 6 or more jalapenos, seeds and all.
-
If it’s the Mexican restaurant I’m thinking of in Front Royal, it’s excellent and there are plenty of seafood and vegetarian dishes to choose from. They’ll make it more or less spicy according to taste. Not all Mexican food is hot.
I’d love to come, but I’m too old, 63, although single, and it’s too far. I used to visit Front Royal every summer for a week from 2005-2018. After that, other obligations took priority, plus my good friend from there passed away last year.
I hope the young adults (and the old ones!) have a good time and possibly meet their future husband or wife!
-
You have to differentiate real Mexican food from Tex-Mex franchises, which is Mexican food adapted to American tastes, Taco Bell is an example of the latter.

The restaurant I’m thinking of is definitely NOT Taco Bell! It’s authentically Mexican. The name escapes me right now. Sorry.

I'm white & I also don't have a "palateless" tongue. Let's have a contest on who can handle spicy food, I bet you would lose. Anyways seafood is nasty, so have fun with that.

That queso sounds amazing!!! You Texans will have to host a TRAD-YAG one day once your children are at an age for courtship. I can see some great food being involved.

Aw... Sorry about your friend... Was she a traditional Catholic? I wonder if we might know her. I grew up in Front Royal. ;)
Was it Jalisco's? That was our favorite Mexican food restaurant and their queso sauce was the best I have ever had! They would make it extra spicy if you wanted it that way. My eldest sister would go Matthew style and get it stuffed with a LOT of jalapenos.
My brother and his wife used to go there for their date nights. They made amazing steak and chicken fajitas topped with their cheese sauce.
Sadly... They closed down this year and are greatly missed. :'(

At the restaurant we are looking at, they have veggie options as well as seafood for those who wouldn't like that. I mean... You have to eat something on Friday.
I wasn't a big seafood fan growing up but I have been to places and people's houses where they make it well. :cowboy:
I am curious. What do you usually eat on Fridays and what sort of restaurant would you go to on a Friday?

I don't do restaurants on Friday or hardly ever because everything is gross. I really don't like other people touching my food. Anyways my cooking is much better anyways. Friday's I'll eat salads, pasta, fruit & vegetables anything that's not meat & seafood or just fast and eat nothing since it's a Friday. When I do visit a restaurant, it would be something like Morton's Steakhouse. I usually bring my own silverware also. ;) Have to be careful these days (monkeypox & other diseases)
P.S. Be careful of the lard in the refried beans in case no one is aware of that.

So I take it, with all of your negativity in this thread, you're not interested in attending the get-together?

Oh dear! That was it, Jaliscos. Did they close because of the COVID nonsense?
My friend’s first name was Sandy. She used to have a Catholic gift and bookstore on the main drag downtown. Yes, she was traditional, and very involved with Adoration. She usually signed up for early on Monday morning. It’s coming up on two years now that she passed away. You probably did know her if you went to Latin Mass at St. John’s in town or bought homeschooling supplies.

We don't usually go to restaurants on Fridays either (unless we are traveling). I just didn't want to have prepare all of the meals for the event. So, we went to looking at other options with meatless meals nearby. ;)
Oh, and maybe someone else remembers the exact location but I remember that traditionally, before Vatican II, lard was actually considered allowable on Fridays. We don't usually use lard and get vegetarian style refried beans when we have them on Fridays. But, it just make me think reading your comment. 😅

Oh, my goodness... Looking at this makes me feel sick... But I have never been a fan of oysters and shrimp heads... And am expecting... 🤢
Hahaha! That being said... I do love a good shrimp scampi with rice, a fish fajita or homestyle New England clam chowder. 😅

I guess if you didn’t grow up eating seafood, then crustaceans’ appearance might turn you off. They ARE related to insects and are definitely not kosher!
I do know that Bp. Zendejas likes super hot shrimp because he personally cooked up a batch, an entire dinner in fact, and shared it with about a dozen of us who remained to clean up after a retreat in Ridgefield. In fact, maybe you should invite him as a celebrity chef? 👨🍳 🍤 🦐 🔥

Jalisco's didn't close down during the COVID "pandemic" but recently within the past few months. I think they just had a hard time keeping up financially and a bunch of other Mexican restaurants opened in the area that took away a lot of their non-local customers. That being said... We went to them through COVID and there were definitely not a lot of people usually there. So, COVID may have affected their overall business. 😥
Oh! You knew Sandy!!! I loved her! Her book store, Faithful and True, really helped bring me into the traditional Catholic Faith and away from the novus ordo. As a teenager I would save up most of my money to buy traditional Catholic books from her store. I bought my Roman Catechism, Liber Usualis, book on the Canons of Trent and the Syllabus of errors and other things from there.
During COVID she started going to the SSPX mission at the outdoor fairgrounds and also when we hosted it temporarily indoors in the hot summer while we were waiting for Saint Athanasius to reopen. I heard that she received the last rites from one of their valid priests in her final hours. She was a lovely lady and I have many fond memories of her from when I was growing up. May she rest in peace.:pray::pray:

We should arrange a cook-off between him and Gemmarose! It would bring out hundreds of curious traditional people I am sure.
;)

I did grow up with seafood eaters, like shrimp, salmon & lobster, some of my siblings eat seafood. I have tried it before and even drowned it with garlic & butter and other seasonings & it's just completely nasty.

Each to their own. It's okay for you not to like seafood. And it is okay for others to be people who do like it. :cowboy:

When you say "you guys" do you mean me and my husband hosting the Meet-Up? Or do you people on the forum?
I am not a member of the SSPX but I have been to their Masses before when there was no other option. I believe that Vatican II was not good. I believe that the post Vatican II Popes likely do not hold the fullness of the papacy except perhaps as legal electees. I do not push bod is the modern sense but uphold it in the catechumal traditional sense.
-

Try not to take it personally. I'm my opinion the thumbs up and thumbs down merely is a quick way for people to say they agree or not. Not necessarily anything personally against anyone. 😅

A joke.

Why are you so fixated on seafood? Even if you were going (which you are not), you do know that you wouldn't be forced to eat seafood? Or anything at all, for that matter?

No, I wasn't traumatized as a child. Seafood is disgusting. But it sure is weird how you are a heartless person for picking on people who have had a traumatizing childhood, do you think that is a funny thing? weird. Warning for all who are visiting catholic info how some people act here. It's a good thing to fast on a Friday since that is the day Christ was crucified.

If I was a new convert or just looking into Catholicism, I would think Mr. G is weird. Anyways a reminder that it's a good thing to fast on a Friday since that is the day Christ was crucified.

I think Mr. G meant it as a joke not to pick on you or anything. 🤗
And I have actually have had fish head soup... We went deep sea fishing when I was a child and caught about 22 Spade Fish. My Mom saved and used almost everything. I remember dreading Fridays until all the 22 frozen fish heads were gone. I mean... Eyes and everything rolling around in a soup... Ugh... 🤢😅

Yes indeed, it was a joke and was not my purpose to make fun of anyone. Yes it is also true that I am a bit on the weird side at times, but I put the blame on Dr. Demento, especially when it comes to "Fish Heads".

Oh, my goodness! I just had to look up what that was... 😬
"In Mexican cuisine, Menudo, also known as pancita ([little] gut or [little] stomach) or mole de panza ("stomach sauce"), is a traditional Mexican soup, made with cow's stomach (tripe) in broth with a red chili pepper base. Hominy, lime, onions, and oregano are used to season the broth." (From Wikipedia). 😅
Have you actually had it before?
I remember having Cuban "Pigs feet stew" when visiting friends. That is the closest I have ever gotten. 😅

HaHa! Yes, many times! It is part of my heritage. I tend to make it without the tripe, though. I make the red chili from scratch which I also use for pulled beef tamales.

I'm actually really excited for you all. Be sure to remind the forum when it gets closer so we can pray for safe travels and such.

A bit off-topic but....
Time to grow up! Why waste good food. I remember my mother saying “eat up. Think of the starving children in Africa”. We won’t always be able to be so picky.

I was thinking more as an hors d'oeuvre.

It could be used by the Catholics to screen out those who would be unfit spouses ... by virtue of showing disgust for chicken feet.

Wise words! I couldn't have said it better.

All right! I think I could take it that way! Then is is more like a tomatoes soup of sorts. Just hearing the words "stomach soup" makes me feel sick but maybe that is because I am expecting. 😅

Thanks, 2Vermont! I will try a do that! The prayers are very appreciated!
We had a couple women cancel but twice as many men sign up at the last minute to take their place. That evened out our ratio of men and women to about even. :smirk:
I am amazed by how many people are coming from out of state and not from close by who go to our local chapel. We have people coming from MD, NY, NJ, NC, FL, Ohio, and even Ontario Canada! Only 4 people are actually coming from VA.

Desperate times call for desperate measures... :laugh1:
That is why we are asking people to help pay to cover food... So, we don't have to have food like that.

So, this is what I'm talking about. If a woman (or a man) despites "food like that," they would be disqualified from consideration. :laugh1:

Yes. Remember the saying: The nearer the bone the sweeter the meat.

Never heard of the saying but I did grew up eating chicken feet. I prefer them in soup but my family prefers them in sauce as the video you sent. I enjoy meat full of collagen and chicken feet, pork feet, ox tails, alligator are both awesome ;)

Lean, ripped, solid musculature and single digit body fat. I'm built like Bruce Lee and every bit as physically capable.

No worries! Definitely not a tomato flavor.

Lol... I totally thought you and Nadir were joking about the chicken feet. :laugh1:
I would be willing to try anything at least once. Want to bring some over for the event? 🙃

Yes. Remember the saying: The nearer the bone the sweeter the meat.
That makes sense! My mother used to claim the backbone whenever we had whole baked chickens. 😅

Well, yes and know.
I would find chicken’s feet much more appetising than some other dishes I have heard mentioned on CathInfo.
And I was making the point that in the future we may not to be able to acquire what we might be used to. We do not know just what our children / grandchildren may have available to them.
And I find it offensive when people make rude comments about another’s cuisine.
Jesus gives the instructions for his disciples away from home.
And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.
This has been the policy in my family of origin and with our own children. We do not get to pick and chose.
-
I hope your hangout goes well! The cuisine looks mouth-watering :) Unfortunately,
seafood is expensive where I live so I don’t usually have it, I love shrimp though!

We were brought up the same way. "Eat what is set before you" was my mom's motto. 🥰
I remember there being many meals where I practically choked the food down growing up. But, it was a good lesson and I am grateful that my parents helped us in regard to food. 😅

We rarely have seafood at our house unless it is frozen, cheaper by nature, or at least somewhat discounted. So, I can relate. 😜
Thanks for the encouragement! 😇🙏
