  • I hope you will all reconsider buying from Amazon. Yes, they are convenient and inexpensive, but it is time to put our principles first.  ADF is not the first "Christian" organization to be barred from the program and I'm sure it won't be the last, but we don't have to lend a helping to Amazon by purchasing from them.

    Quote
In ending ADF’s association with the AmazonSmile program, Amazon is severing ties with an organization that promotes the liberty and equal protection of rights and fights against discrimination on campuses and in the public sphere. That is Amazon’s right to do so, just as it is the right of any business to make hypocritical decisions.  link

    Quote
Unlike ADF, hardline Islamic groups are allowed to participate in Amazon Smile. That includes the Islamic Center of Jersey City, whose imam called Jєωs “apes and pigs” and requested Allah’s help in killing them “down to the very last one,” according to the Anti-Defamation League.  link

Another group barred from Amazon is the Ruth Institute.link

  • I sympathize with your feelings on the matter. It seems horribly unfair and upside-down.

But with all due respect, most people don't have a choice. Most Trad Catholics, just like virtually all Americans, are not self-sufficient. They don't produce anything for themselves. Most Americans can't even cook their own meals or take care of haircuts at home, much less produce their own soap, toothpaste, hairbrushes, tools...

And what Catholic-friendly store is going to sell us our electronics, books, etc.?

Is patronizing Wal-mart, Costco, or Barnes & Noble really going to be any better for the Catholic Faith? Pretty much every large company supports ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖity, abortion, etc. Wal-mart has a horrible reputation that they treat employees like slaves. Both Lowe's and Home Depot are both bad. Where am I supposed to get my concrete and lumber? I don't have a choice. So I spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars at these places every year.

We have a mom & pop hardware store, but they are very small. Tools? Yes. Lumber and concrete? no. And even then, they are sometimes more expensive. Most large Trad families are strapped for cash, and they need to buy their necessary goods at large, high-volume discount stores, rather than convenience or specialty stores where everything is 20-40% more expensive.

It's like the old issue of businesses that make their employees work on Sunday. There just aren't enough REAL Catholics to make them change. So every option you and I have to buy groceries, for example, falls short in this way.

Trying to support only Trad Catholic organizations is an exercise in futility.

  • All I'm saying is that it is time to make some hard choices.

There are enough businesses out there that are not actively anti-Catholic and/or anti-Christian to do business with, we don't need to lick the boot that kicks us.

  • Does Walmart use the SPLC to make its policies?  Is Walmart specifically anti-Catholic or anti-Christian?

There are thousands of options to Walmart, Amazon, Home Depot, Target, etc.  Get online and find them if you are so inspired.

    1. No, there are not 1000's of options, especially for the large bulky items that I mentioned.
    2. I am not so inspired. I don't have the time to research, nor drive for hours to get to a place that isn't Home Depot for my concrete. Gas is expensive. I have a big family that won't fit in a so called "smart" vehicle. I have a family to raise and a life to live. Ditto for paying more. I am not so wealthy that I can afford to pay more for everything. So the cheapest stores (that rely on volume rather than high markup) will get my business.

You can't buy 80 lb bags of concrete online. It's not economically feasible to ship large items like a 10 foot 2x4, or a heavy bag of concrete. Such things must be bought locally. Alternative local sources either exist or they don't, depending on where you live. There's no room for mystery or debate there.

Maybe in the 1950's or 1970's there were local stores to sell you this stuff, but not anymore. The big box stores have taken over. It's a shame, I'm not happy about it, but that's the reality we face today: we either buy from them, or do without. I have made my choice; everyone else is free and welcome to make theirs.

I will also point out -- big box stores didn't take over on MY watch, it was the Baby Boomers who oversaw the destruction of the majority of small businesses and mom & pop stores. When Wal-mart was taking over all across the country, I was just out of high school. It's the Baby Boomers who wanted the convenience, etc. They (as a group) actually had a choice, and they made their choice.

What if all the grocery stores near you supported the LGBT movement, liberalism, political correctness, etc.

Would you die of hunger for your principles, would you move, or would you *gasp* compromise?

Personally, I'm compromising my principles completely in the area of shopping. I have completely given up on sticking to any principles in this area. It's the exact opposite of how I am with regards to resisting Vatican II (where I'm ready to do anything, even die, for my beliefs).

Perhaps it's because resisting Vatican II is required to be a Catholic, or to save one's soul. It's important, and will have a direct effect on my children. But Divine and Church law say absolutely nothing about supporting a Home Depot that makes generous contributions to sodomite causes. (I also remember there was a small anti-Abortion protest outside a new Target, many years ago, in the Midwest city I grew up in.) Furthermore, there are so few REAL (7 days a week) Catholics today that we're not going to change anything in this regard. Half the country wants the criminal Hillary for president, for crying out loud!

The Church teaches that as long as you are not personally, directly donating to the sodomites or Freemasons, you're in the clear. If that wasn't the case, we'd all be in trouble -- or living a very different lifestyle than we live today (think: Bear Grylls)

  • Amazon and Walmart are very close competitors for the items I typically buy, but I generally opt for Amazon because they not only give me a kick back through their credit card, but, ironically, they also give a few pennies to my chosen organization... currently the Texas Homeschool Coalition. For every 1 good organization that has been unjustly banned from the program, there are hundreds which have not.

  • Matthew, buying things from a disreputable pagan company isn't a compromise in principle, since there's no principle that says we have to buy from a particular source one way or the other .
    .
At the same time, I understood Marlear to be essentially talking about going above and beyond, recommending that people consider making a sacrifice via economic boycott. I didn't take her to be even suggesting that continuing to purchase from Amazon. I think it's laudable and preferable if someone can, just like it's laudable and preferable to fast, or to be celibate, despite the fact that most people most of the time aren't, and justifiably so. But if someone like Marlear doesn't bring it up than those who *can* might never even know about the opportunity.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

    Sent today to http://www.holyfacedevotion.com/manoppello_hoax.htm

Hello, I am writing to tell you something interesting.  I ordered Devotion to the Sacred Heart from amazon, choosing an book that was claimed as like new, the cover of which was shown very small.  Usually the cover image is clear and displayed larger, by amazon.  In this case, SuperBookDeals has several versions of the book, new and used, on offer.  I chose the best price for what seemed the best quality and thought no more about it.  The book arrived, and lo and behold, the Manoppello image was on the cover.  Because it makes Christ look effeminate it causes distress to say the least; on seeing it, I also remembered something about a "Manoppello Hoax" - and lo again, found the article on your website.

I'm going to learn soon I guess whether amazon and superbookdeals will pay for shipping for me to return it; in any case, from my mail to them including a link to the article on your site at least a few people over there know a little more than they did (!)  If they read the mail; I'm not 'giving in' right away and just paying to ship back.... by the time I do if I have to some more people will be clued in.

The book was reprinted by a re-printer , has no copyright notice, but is in perfect condition.  "They"  could have chosen any of a large number of images to put on the cover.  That they chose that one makes me suspect they are against Christ, and the fact that amazon did this to save money with a third party supplier I guess they are called made my 'conspiracy theory' side light up a bit.

  • In moral theology terms, buying from Amazon entails a non-necessary remote mediate material cooperation in the evil; consequently the principle of double-effect applies.  And a family's need to obtain goods and stay afloat financially outweighs the few pennies per year that might ultimately make their way towards Amazon's perpetration of various evils.
