  • Jeff Morin: Enjoying quality time
Engineering manager, 37, Lincoln Park, Mich.

Rising gas and food prices have forced us to change our lifestyle. But there is an upside. The kids and I spend more time at home doing the free things like playing games and going for walks. These types of activities create a much stronger bond with your child than going to the movies or sports game where you don't interact as much.

When food shopping, we buy more fruits and veggies instead of prepared foods. It saves money and is healthier. We also cut back cable to just the basic stations. Again, the effect was less TV and more quality time.

Spending less money also means doing less so there is more free time to do those free projects around the house. For example, cleaning out the garage, basement and closets of all the useless clutter. I've found many treasures that can be sold on Ebay or at a garage sale. The result is a cleaner, more organized home which in turn reduces stress and anxiety.

  • He sounds like me! Hahaha

Only I didn't just scale back cable, I don't have a TV at all.

But I also believe in buying healthier (even if more time consuming) foods -- making things from scratch, eating closer to nature (instead of super-preserved, dyed, processed foods).

But the part that I liked the best was where he said what he did with his free time! I do the exact same things -- I keep up the house, learn new things (gardening, home maintenance, and much more) and use my time in a very productive manner. When I step back, I'm often amazed at how much work I manage to get done in a week.

The result is that my house is better organized, more relaxing to be in, and I don't mind being home!  I spend time with kids instead of doing worldly things -- and so my kids feel loved and THEY are more pleasant to be around. It's a win-win situation.

    This guy really gets it!

    Matthew

But there's a downside... he didn't mention his wife/children's mother. Hope he's not divorced. Or perhaps he's a widower already. If so, that's fine with me.
