  • Questioned by members of the House Oversight Committee about why so few Syrian Christian refugees have been admitted to the United States, the Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration said on December 17 that “they’re not fleeing because they feel safer” than other Syrians do. The Washington Examiner reported: Pressed later in the hearing on her answer that Christians, a persecuted group in the Middle East, “feel safer” in Syria than other groups, [Anne] Richard backtracked and argued only “some” Christians felt safer. She said that was because a higher percentage of Christians in Syria support President Bashar Assad. One congressman on the committee said that 29 Syrian Christians have been accepted into the United States in the past year, and another said that 53 have been accepted in the past five years.

  • “It’s impossible for us Christians to live under ISIS,” Fr. Mourad said. “The entire Syrian people are victims of this war. I believe that when Jesus gave his life he gave it for all, and we, as a Church, are responsible for the entire Syrian people, not only the Christians. This is a responsibility to commit ourselves with very seriously, that everyone has peace.”
