Fool me twice: California’s stem cell fiasco
Proponents of human embryonic stem cell experimentation are trying to resurrect the failed California Institution for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), which was created in 2004 under Prop 71.

A new bond measure, Prop 14, will appear on California ballots in November to fund CIRM, which has already burned through $3 billion in taxpayer money. Prop 14 will cost taxpayers nearly $8 billion, including interest.

CIRM makes the audacious claim that it is “Curing the World.” This is a blatant LIE. CIRM (i.e., taxpayer) funded research using embryonic stem cells has not led to any actual treatments. CIRM is not curing the world. It is deceiving the world.

MIT’s Technology Review reports that “no field of biotechnology has promised more and delivered less in the way of treatments than embryonic stem cells.”
It is not necessary to destroy living human beings in order to reap the potential benefits of stem cell research. Researchers have found that reprogrammed adult stem cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells, “are molecularly and functionally equivalent” to embryonic stem cells.

A COVID patient in San Diego who was comatose and near death was successfully treated with bone marrow stem cells. A researcher with Parkinson’s disease is able to resume his former activities after being treated with his own stem cells. A five-year old who suffered from a potentially fatal immune disorder is now able to live a normal life after being treated with reengineered adult stem cells.

Now that CIRM is out of money and looking to California taxpayers to rescue it, we can expect even more deception and manipulationfrom those who want us to prop up its unethical and unproven experimentation.

Life Legal strongly urges Californians to VOTE NO on Prop 14.Embryonic stem cell enthusiasts, promising “cures around the corner,” fooled us once. Don’t let them fool us again.

Read our full article on the problems with human embryonic stem cell research and CIRM’s campaign of deception here.
Life Legal is prepared to take legal action if the initiative should pass.
