  • HI Vladimir!!

Thank you for the beautiful words of St. Philip Neri.

And your avatars are truly holy and gorgeous.  Who is the author of your brilliant Pieta?  I wish I could see that painting in person.

  • Hello Elizabeth.

I am not sure who the painter of my avatar is. I chose it from a search for images of Our Lady of Sorrows.

  • The painting looks like a Pre-Raphaelite.  Maybe.

    It is exquisite.

Would somebody mind explaining singularity for me?  So I may try to avoid it?

  • Oh, my apologies, I did not understand your question.

Singularity would be trying to stand out (being "singular"), for example, many Catholics today want to dress in antique clothing.

Quite. I believe St John Baptiste De La Salle was also critical of such singularity.

    This is what he said:

"Singularity in dress is ridiculous... proof that the mind is somewhat deranged." (The Rules of Christian Decorum and Civility.)

    Simplicity of dress
Regarding Gemma's simplicity of dress, Bishop Proserpio writes in his book "St Gemma Galgani" -"The simplicity of her dress was well known. Lucca [Italy] shall always remember Gemma's "mantellette", under which she invariably kept her hands when going out of the house, oftentimes to hide the stigmata. Her hat (black colored straw hat -editor) ...had become an object of numerous comments from other maidens of the town. Mr. Matteo, the patriarch of the Giannini family, confessed that he was, at times, ashamed to go out of the house in Gemma's company, because as he put it "she was so ridiculously dressed". And yet, Gemma was noted for the simplicity of her dress and comportment. She was not really ridiculous in her way of dressing, but she did not want to wear the fashionable clothes of the girls of her age. Whenever such clothes were presented to her, she would find a way of exchanging them for older ones, or she passed them onto the poor." http://www.stgemmagalgani.com/2008/11/personal-character-traits-of-st-gemma.html
