It was an extravagant send-off worthy of a Hollywood gangster film – an elaborate black and gold carriage pulled by six black horses wearing plumes, a low-flying helicopter dropping rose petals from the sky and a large crowd of tearful mourners.

There was even a brass band playing the theme tune from The Godfather.
But the funeral thrown in Rome for Vittorio Casamonica, 65, an alleged crime boss, has outraged Italians, embarrassed the Catholic Church and prompted calls for an official government investigation.

Questions are being asked about who granted permission for the lavish spectacle and why the Catholic authorities permitted one of their churches, the Basilica of San Giovanni Bosco, to be used for the funeral mass.

Politicians of all stripes expressed indignation that the life of a suspected gangster was celebrated in such a public and flamboyant way.

A poster on the gates of the church proclaimed: “You have conquered Rome, now conquer paradise.”

That raises a question: Is blowing up a Church still immoral if it's filled to the brim with mafiosos?

Eh. In America, they'll give a funeral Mass to some baptized sodomite that's had a thousand partners, a drug addict and shown up to church maybe five times. Nothing new in these days.
