  • Hello CathInfo Family!!

Just a quick note to say that the movie " the Hobbit" will not disappoint you!

A fair warning...if you have any kind of health problems or are not feeling well, DO NOT see it in IMAX 3D!!!!  A heart attack was in the making just during the previews, ha ha ha!! :laugh2:

Otherwise, it is enchanting with great cinematography, bravo!! (If you are squeamish and/or don't like Orcs, close your eyes during those parts!!!! I did!!)

    Love,

    michaela +
(Still trying to recover from the IMAX, and my hubby is still picking popcorn off of himself, because I jumped when it started, and the bucket jumped out of my hands and onto him!!  :roll-laugh1:)

I guess you just had to be there :)

  • I have not been able to see it yet but my son did and thought it was wonderful.  I think those who suffer from a propensity to motion sickness should stay away from the HFR version though as I have heard of people feeling "sea sick" while watching it.

Our whole family is a big fan of Tolkien, but I have heard that Bishop Williamson is not, does anybody know if this is correct, and if so why?  I have done an internet search for any comments of his on this subject but have come up with a blank, perhaps I am incorrect.

  • I thought it was fair, but I also felt he didn't get Tolkien right in certain respects, like the Dwarves being more rude than they were in the book, introducing a villain that was already dead in the book, and downgrading Bilbo's Tookish part til near the end of the movie.

  • Dear Marsha,

Bishop Williamson is not opposed to Tolkien. :). And in response to another post, he doesn't think that "The Sound of Music" is pornographic or sensual, he just doesn't like the "sappiness!"

You can trust me, I have a dear friend who is a protege of the dear Bishop. I asked him about these issues, and he gave me the answers.

I also did not read The Hobbit BEFORE seeing the movie (but the audiobook narrated by Robert Inglis is phenomenal!!) but I agree, there are some discrepancies in the film version. But that ALWAYS seems to happen, doesn't it!?!?  :scratchchin:

The cinematography was breathtaking, though!!

My hubby was commenting on the fact that the book was more lighthearted than the movie...

    Love,

  • The movie certainly was a lot of fun and breathtaking cinematography.  Worth a watch.  Lots of violence but very little profanity.

A most important aspect is that the movie includes a lot of really likable characters.

  • My children asked me if they could go see it again just to watch the scene with all the flying dishes.  :laugh1:  Boys will be boys.

  • I saw it this evening and thought it was just okay.  I wish Peter Jackson would tell Tolkien's story and not insist on acting as though he can do it better.

  • Yeah, the bit about the Morgul knife and Azog revived in a revenge bid against Thorin was a bit disconcerting, among other things.

  • I saw it with several family members, including an 18 year old cousin who is an even more rabid Tolkien fan than I am.  When I asked him what he thought he said, "It was an okay movie, and it even had a few characters in common with the book.

Seriously, Peter Jackson could tell the story straight in one long movie, and easily do it in two reasonable length movies.  Instead he will add a bunch of nonsense and claim he had to leave out stuff that Tolkien actually wrote becasue the movie would be too long otherwise.

  • So, dear Catholics, what will the pagan - the majority of the audience - take away from seeing this version of The Hobbit?

  • Peter Jackson said he culled the extra things from the Appendices of the Lord of the Rings and adapted them. Still, there was nothing in the Appendices or any of Tolkien's other writings for some of Jackson's additions. One such thing was the retelling of the Dwarves-Orcs war: there were no Dwarves of the Iron Hills involved, like Dain and Nain. Also, the film didn't show that Gandalf deliberately wanted a small party of Dwarves to go to Erebor with the Hobbit, not the armies that Thorin wanted (this was taken from Unfinished Tales); instead, it showed Thorin explaining that he had the support of the other Dwarven races, but not his kin of the Iron Hills.

And the bit with Radagast: that was odd, to tell the truth.

  • The film's producer, Peter Jackson, is an atheist, and it appears that the movie has sorcery and witchcraft in it.

It seems like another typical Hollywood production. I'll have to pass on it.

  • I've never done more than start a Tolkien book.  I remember liking some animated series of the Hobbit on TV as a small boy.

I have a copy of the Hobbit from my mother's parents' house.  I'm not certain what to make of it really.  Perhaps I should try to understand what the fuss is all about?

It seems to be a bit of a paradox (at least on the surface), the immense popularity of the works of a reputedly devoutly Catholic author, at this time in history.

There must be more than meets the eye, and that is what interests me, more than the story, which seems like just a children's story.

  • In my youth I had the first page or so memorized--"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit..."    You really should give it a try Tele. I haven't seen the movie yet, but no doubt the book is much better anyway.

I think I have an inborn hostility to the English.
