There is a cause for Catherine Doherty's canonization, but her marriage situation as well as her life and the life and marriages of Fr. Eddie Doherty sound like unusual ones for Catholics.

  • That whole cause is so sketchy. The people who swarm around that area are all very charismatic and they carry little pieces of her scarves and hankerchiefs as pseudo-relics....*shiver*

They never get into her marriage situation, they just comb over that. I would bet it's a little off.

  • Well, Eddie is good to go, although his story is unusual, he is in the clear.
Catherine on the other hand was married for years to Boris and then got an annulment just in time to marry Eddie...sounds fishy.

I would say it's a little off, stinks of Vat II libralism and indulgence of self.

Her first marriage in the Russian Orthodox church was to her first cousin. In the Catholic Church, doesn't it say marrying first cousins is an impediment to marriage? You can marry a second cousin but not a first cousin - correct me if I'm wrong. So her annulment would have been a valid annulment.

I know being in the first degree of kindred would be a good cause for ratifying an annulment, but why was Catherine Doherty allowed to stay presumably married with Boris even after she became Catholic? Or was she? The article did not say anything about whether Boris became Catholic. Nonetheless, I think it is as far as to a third cousin to whom one can be married. Cousin and second cousin would be impediments, if I am not mistaken.

  • She was born into minor nobility. Especially in Europe this gives one a "get out of jail free card" to marry a great many closely related people. The church has made exceptions throughout history for royal families so politically beneficial marriages may be made. The same situation with Henry VIII, the marriage was approved by the church and that is why his annullment wouldn't go through. The story says:

"having gotten an annullment, she married Eddie"

It sounds to me like she got it so she could remarry, that ALWAYS muddies the waters.
