  • Two books that convinced me never to watch TV again where Jerry Morans's Four arguments for the elimination of television and Edward Bernay's Propaganda.

You really have no idea how bad television is until you read that book. One thing I remember from the book was about brainwaves while watching television. The screen has a flickering that induces a hypnotic state so the messages that come on the screen are beamed deep into the psyche, therefore television is messing with people on a really deep level and people have no idea about it.

The other book propaganda, written in 1928, was shocking because of how advanced thr techniques for controlling thoughts and opinions was 80 years ago, I can't imagine what they have now. Whatever it is though you know its being transmitted through the television.

Bottom line is this, its doing things to you that you don't know about. Don't watch it.

  • I think it is safe to say that if we were tv watchers we wouldn't be on Cathinfo.  We gave up cable about 16 years ago and the only thing I missed was the weather channel.  I have certainly become counter cultural in those years.  However it blows the minds of the Cox Communication people when I tell them I don't want cable.

  • Yes, some people almost fall over when I tell them I don't have a TV or a cell phone. They probably wonder if I'm Amish!  I don't have a full beard though, and I certainly don't dress like one!

TONS of money and resources have been invested in controlling the hearts and minds of TV viewers.  The sophistication of this work is probably off the charts by now!

  • when u homeschool T.V becomes a huge nuisance. I do miss animal planet and the learning channel but the commercials drove me nuts especially Barbie one ewh.
I still like special effect movies but honestly Im re thinking that position as the immorality or sɛҳuąƖity or worse vocabulary bothers me. I have kids that know I watch these things so Im accountable.
I liked prince of persia but it didnt bring me closer to God. The mummy is way to demonic for me. I did like Hldalgo true story too.
It may be a process for some of us. I live off grid so a movie once in a blue moon is all I watch otherwise its pretty quiet in the home.   Annie

  • So we've all seen the "Song of Bernadette" the Ten Commandments (a few parts not needed in that one) but hey Im a young Catholic and didnt get the priviledge of growing up with these wonderfully made movies. I find the new catholic movies ( even endorsed by the vat) either the acting is poor or the substance is lacking. I recently watched St. Rita put out by St. Francis Book Store (not sure who made these ) I was very dissapointed and at one point squirmish at one scene that left sɛҳuąƖ conatations. I guess Im asking where are all the good catholic saint movies? When there are 4 versions of St. Joan of Arc do I have to watch em all to decide? I have 5 children and yes brought up in the T.V generation so sitting down to watch a family movie preferable about my 2000yr old faith would be wonderful.  Any recomendations would be great

The Television is the tool of the devil. Always say the Rosary. Stay away from the near occasion of sin.
The TV is full of sin, and has corrupted three generations
of people into pagan life styles, that will lead them into
    hell fire.

I'm sorry I meant to thumbs you up. I really am not used to this software. I suppose I will be making lots of mistakes til I get the hang of it.
I can't even find an appropriate smiley to describe my remorse.

  • Dominican Teaching Sisters - No TV.

And from Fr. Poncelet, who wrote on the subject, and founded Our Lady's Apostolate of No TV:

"A priest's primary duty is to save souls; he is responsible for prevailing moral atttitudes in his parish and specifically for the salvation of his parishioners' souls. . . The priest, then must come to an honest recognition of the primary avenue to the destruction of souls in his Catholic homes, as that window to the world of immorality -- the television set. And he must continually point out to his parishioners that acceptance of TV entertainment is simply not compatible with the Christian life of spirituality."

"The disintegration of real Catholic culture has been a slow process begun two generations back. It happens to be co-incident with the degradation of TV fare, which began its downward slide with the inception of the medium, and accelerated that trend at a precipitous rate from the 1960s onward."

"Thanks to the constant depiction -- in an entertainment mode -- of immoral acts. . . presentations once considered scandalous, perverse, and unfit for consideration by self-respecting people, now pass for commonplace, acceptable fare even among those claiming religious convictions."

"Such programming is often criticized mildly as being crude, in bad taste, or even as awful -- but hardly ever is it called sinful."

"James Drummey, in a recent question/answer column in The Wanderer wrote "Even the best intentioned Catholics can become desensitized. . . if they watch these portrayed on televisions in a favorable light, night after night in their own homes."

"We cannot hide from basic Catholic moral laws forever. And the sins that are most easily committed, and which involve most "grievous matter" are also the sins most exploited on television -- those against chastity and purity."

    Fr. Frank Poncelet
    Sincerely,

    Shin

Four years ago, Bhutan, the fabled Himalayan Shangri-la, became the last nation on earth to introduce television. Suddenly a culture, barely changed in centuries, was bombarded by 46 cable channels. And all too soon came Bhutan's first crime wave - murder, fraud, drug offences. If anyone ever needed proof that TV is disastrous for traditional morals, it can be found in the case of Bhutan.

  • I always did say t.v. was my drug of choice.   it is quite a habit to overcome.

when I realized that cable was costing over 800 dollars a year (on a tight budget no less) I thought this is nuts! and cancelled. when I did have cable. I would mostly watch tlc, discover, history channel.

and a man of Levinson.. produces family, moral issue movies are very good and wholesome.

anyway... we have a small tv that has digital over the air and we still get 10 channels. (sorry this is a boring set-up isn't it)

that being said... with the exception of public broadcasting (ironically)  the programming is so offensive as a rule.

I know the Lord wants me to invest my time in Him and for Him... cold turkey is difficult. but with His help I pray to stop altogether.
