Confession to One’s Guardian Angel as a Devotion?

  • I remember on Sunday hearing a sermon about the Angels, and how the priest made the point that we should aim to grow in our relationship with our guardian angel.

A thought came to me last night during my nightly prayers about a potential devotion to our guardian angels, this being a sort of confession to our angel. I am not saying that by doing this you will receive absolution, as this is not the sacrament of penance. It would be a sort of rehearsal for confession, as I would name particular sins like I would in the confessional while making acknowledgments that I am truly sorry for having committed these sins in the sight of my guardian angel (in a way similar to the Confiteor), and that I beg his help and God’s help that I may have true contrition for them. An act of contrition would be recited after this.

I think that this prospective devotion would help me to remember the presence of my guardian angel and call upon him for help. If I humiliate myself in this way before him, I will be more humble and therefore more willing to call upon him.

What do you all think of this?

  • I think you can get your guardian angel to pray if you are too ill or poorly , I could be wrong .

You can also send them to the tabernacle to pray.

I know padre.pio fell out with his guardian angel once after he was attacked by the devil and his guardian angel started singing or something .. apparently he went chasing after padre pio grovelling saying " I'm so sorry "

  • No matter how good it sounds on paper, I would steer clear of something if it's not traditional.

The Catholic Faith is not about novelty or coming up with The Next Big Thing -- or The Next Big Devotion.

Steady as she goes, boring, slow and steady, "if it was good enough for my Grandpa it's good enough for me" -- those are the order of the day for Catholics.

I know we're American, many of us European, and so invention is in our blood. But this desire for novelty, improvement, and exploration must not be applied to matters of religion. The closest thing would be writing a Catholic book -- there's an outlet for your creativity. But as for all our other spiritual needs -- we should strive to be like our Great Grandparents. Not come up with things they wouldn't recognize or things they would be *the least bit uncomfortable* about.

I appreciate your advice. I’m going to look into more traditional prayers and devotions to one’s guardian angel, and do those instead. Though I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with what I laid out (maybe there is, I’m willing to admit I’m wrong if I am), it would be better like you said to stick to devotions that have stood the test of time rather than attempt one that came to me last night. May post some good ones I find in another thread.

  • For that matter, I would pass all your "inspirations" by a good Traditionally-formed, certainly valid (Traditional) Catholic priest.

You don't want the devil deceiving you, after all. Don't think the devil tempts every one in the same way (e.g., with mortal sin). Some individuals he might tempt with FASTING. Yes, fasting. He'll push you to more and more extreme fasting, until you snap and become an epicurean glutton. JACKPOT for the devil. That is just ONE of his many thousands of tactics. Just remember: angelic intellect. Humility and obedience (to your trusted priest) are your best weapons against such a foe.

  • I think it is legitimate to pray to your Guardian Angel, "with the help of God's grace" to recall and know your sins you may have forgotten, or sins you don't realize.  Your Guardian Angel will accompany you into the Confessional in any case.

"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • I wish I would be tempted :popcorn:to fast!

No way that’s happening!  Seriously, Matthew is right.  Our Lord gave the right to absolve sins
to the Apostles of the Church, not to angels.  Stick to the tried and true when it comes to religion, or you’ll end up in Vat. II or worse, totally off the rails.

    Thanks for this!

I understand your concerns, but I made it clear in the OP that it never came to me that by doing this I would be “absolved” by my guardian angel. It would be a symbolic practice to excite contrition for sin, not a true sacramental confession. But upon further reflection, I think doing what Matthew and Incredulous are suggesting sounds far better than this idea.
