Today I learned that a Trad Catholic (SSPX) man just gave up his law practice. He was a bankruptcy lawyer in California.
What's he going to do now, work retail? "Learn 2 code"? work the land? That's not just something you can start up from zero in your early 40's.
Maybe his primary motive was to get out of California, and maybe he figured it would be too hard to start from scratch in another state. But what's the alternative? I plan to ask him.
Just when you think you've seen everything. In all my years I never met a licensed professional (lawyer, doctor, engineer) who invested years of their life, plus 10's of thousands of dollars (whether free grants or loans) to get degrees/certified, and then just gave it up. Except MAYBE in the case of becoming a priest. But that's it. And even then, we're talking EXTREMELY rare.
