  • Since the mention of television comes up ever so often, why not have a thread discussing the issue? IMHO, TV is very much a waste of time really. Some good things can be found shown, sure, but there is also so much garbage mixed in it at the same time as well, which is why we should just avoid television altogether. I remember hearing a recent recording of Dr. David Allen White about television and movies. From what I gather from him and from basic reasoning, television and movies are simply NOT real. Of course, I state the obvious, but we must always keep that in mind. Those things we have seen on the screen are simply images captured and made up of energy, or basically it is a use of what we can find in God's creation like we can find in other forms of technology. Nothing replaces real human interaction, something which God Himself created. I remember then when Dr. White would also talk about the real experience of drama and theater in the recording I heard.

  • Even supposed "good" shows are not worthy of our time. Father Perez this Sunday, in his sermon, talked about how even just watching TV for the news is a waste of time- because what the news reports is always a lie or not the true side of the story. He said that 5 times in his life, he was physically present at events where the news people were present to cover the story. In all 5 cases, he would watch the news later on that night to see how the media had reported the event, and every time they had not told the truth - he said that what was covered in the news was not what had taken place. Even when the news reports on things that are going on in the Middle East, they are not the true story. I know this because I have family members in the Middle East and they used to tell a different story than what the news told or would reveal things that were going on that the American media conveniently left unreported.

So, for those who argue, "well, I only watch for the news", you are wasting your time, because you are watching lies - it is time that you could use for spiritual reading to better your soul.

  • Yes, you certainly can't watch Fox, CNN, etc. at face value.

They can be interesting if one is interested in "what kind of propaganda are they spewing?" or "What do they want people to feel/think?"

But in that case, it is almost impossible to not be affected by the propaganda yourself. They are using human psychology as a tool to attain their ends, and none of us is a robot.

BUT -- there is a solution. Read CNN.com or other mainstream websites (or newspapers). When you are READING something, your brain is still active (and you can be critical -- which is CRITICALLY important when reading enemy-controlled media!)

But when watching TV, it is completely different.

  • Television as it is today is to the mind what arsenic is to the body.

  • Even Elvis had enough sense to shoot out his television set.

  • What's interesting, though, is that even when you know how bad TV is, as long as you're human it will be "somewhat" appealing. As in, your eyes will naturally gravitate toward it, since it (usually) is the most interesting thing in the room.

Just because it has moving pictures, etc.

Just like a mature adult knows that candy isn't health food, but it's hard to resist the spread of M&M's, hershey kisses, etc. at a party.

It will always be appealing, as long as we're human. It's one of those "life long struggles", I think.
