I have heard the dumbest arguments about onanism from catholics and I would just laugh it off, if it didn't seem to be so common place! Apparently, there are these priests who go around telling people that onanism isn't a mortal sin, unless it is "compulsive." Of course, anything that is "compulsive," is deemed to be beyond your control. Hence the term, "compulsive!" So, the very same priest who says onanism isn't a mortal sin, unless it is "compulsive-onanism," will inevitably say to someone who confesses a "compulsion" to onanism, that since they lack "full control," it isn't a mortal sin either! Thus, onanism is rendered a venial sin, by default!

Unfortunately, some poor slob will go to confession and be told by some liberal priest that they needn't bother to confess before receiving the eucharist, because it is just a "venial" sin and as a result receive the eucharist unworthily and thus be deprived of the very graces they seek and need to overcome their bad habits!

I bet this happens to millions of Novus Ordites, being told that their mortal sins are not mortal so they need not bother confessing them (not just onanism but other sins as well, such as contraception). My experience in the Novus Ordo is that almost everyone goes to communion and almost nobody goes to confession. I wouldn't be surprised if 99 percent of the Novus Ordo communions received were sacrileges because the communicant was in mortal sin (If the Novus Ordo is valid. If it is not valid I don't think it would be a sacrilege).

I can't believe the nerve of some of the priests who do this. It is like they really want to impose their erroneous views on others. Even to the point of trying to shame people for just wanting to go to confession. That seems diabolic to me. Although, the priest may think he's mr. good guy or whatever, the consequences seems horrid!

This kind of stuff seems so scandalous to me, that I really can't blame anyone for thinking the church is full of bologna. I guess in that sense, it teaches me not to judge apostate/"m.i.a." catholics too harshly. So many of the ones I know are "non-denominationals" now. It's sad though, because I think they miss out on the fullness of the faith. Of course, most catholics get little better. What a sad, sad state of affairs.
