NASA scientist blasts Hinge match who joked she was probably 'the receptionist'

    Watch it, buddy.
A woman with a Ph.D. in planetary science has called out a man she matched with on the dating app Hinge after the potential suitor joked that the woman’s real-life work experience at NASA was likely as “the receptionist.”
She fired back at the failed flirtation by sharing that her mother works as a receptionist – and that judging a woman’s intellect based on her looks isn’t the greatest way to start a potential relationship.
On Aug. 14, Dr. Lauren McKeown revealed the flop of a conversation in a Twitter post that has since won 167,000 likes and 15,000 shares to date.

"And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I am single," McKeown joked of the tale, sharing two screenshots of the Hinge conversation with a bachelor identified only as Mikey.

The two connected after Mikey replied to one of the woman’s profile prompts that read "The dorkiest thing about me is: I worked at NASA.” (iStock)

“That's cool, wait ‘til I tell my parents,” Mikey wrote back.

Over (under?) the moon to start my position as Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the @NHM_London in London today with @Peter_Grindrod! My new project will involve research on meteorites that came all the way to Earth from Mars

McKeown started a chat, and the bachelor opened up the conversation with a painfully cringe-worthy question.
“So what are you like the receptionist? [Just kidding] you look reasonably smart,” he asked.

“Smart enough to know at least that judging a woman's intelligence based on her appearance might not be the best way to initiate conversation,” McKeown wrote. “PS. my mother is a primary school receptionist and is the wisest, most inspirational, and kindest person I know. So much so in fact that my PhD. thesis in planetary science is dedicated to her.”
Naturally, online commenters had a whole lot to say about the unbelievable exchange.

I think Mikey has a case of "fragile male ego which cannot handle a smart and awesome woman being superior to him".

The best partner is one who isn’t afraid of your intelligence and celebrates your success. When my husband comes around my work, he introduces himself as “I get to be married to her!”

Others, meanwhile, were more skeptical of the exchange in general. One commenter pressed the woman to “consider both sides” in forgiving Mikey’s failed attempt at humor, while another Twittizen wondered why someone with McKeown’s “looks and brain” was looking for love on Hinge in the first place.

Not to defend blatant misogyny, but I would be skeptical if a girl or guy works at the agency of literally ever kid's dream. Please don't hate me forever, but we should also consider the off-chance he tried to joke and immediately regretted it. We should consider both sides.

Yikes. Hinge has a zero tolerance policy for behavior like this. We're on it. And while we're at it, your next Hinge date is on us. DM us! We hope you find someone worth deleting Hinge for soon.

Reps for the dating app, too, eventually jumped into the fray.

  • What did he do wrong? Make a joke? Hinge has a "zero tolerance" policy for gently ribbing women as a joke? It's over.

Right now this woman is young, beautiful, thinks she's immortal, and on the top of the world. But in 30 years she'll still be single, rich, and taking lots of anti-depressants surrounded by several dogs and cats. She'll be lonely with no children, and for all her office busywork at NASA, her life will have no real meaning. Young women like her are so idealistic. She pictures curing cancer, being the first woman on Mars. But the reality is a daily grind staring at a microscope, entering data on a PC, working for The Man.

  • Years ago a young lieutenant cracked a joke at a party at his commanding officer's house. The CO didn't think it was funny. In fact he found it offensive. That young man never got invited anywhere again for as long as he was stationed there.  As my father-in-law used to say "When you tell a joke just know that it can blow up in your face if the right person isn't laughing. Maybe the scientist is too prickly but the man's approach was clumsy.
