  • I'm searching but not having much luck finding out why there is St Vincent Ferrer water. We received some not long ago and I'm curious about how St Vincent Ferrer water came to be. What is the story behind it and why does he specifically have a sacramental water as opposed to some other saint? Does anyone know?

  • To my recollection I have not heard of it before.

But I do know that Saint Vincent Ferrer taught people about the
efficacy of Holy Water and the importance of using it piously.

Here is a passage from a biography of the saint:

St. Vincent s labours in Piedmont we have
records of the numberless conversions and of his
miracles. In fact the miraculous marks every step
of the Saint s Apostolate in Italy ; while scattered
throughout the country are numerous wayside
shrines dedicated to San Vincenzo, tokens of a
people s gratitude to, and love of the Spanish
    Friar. 1

Savoy, Switzerland, and Lyons were evangelized
by him during 1403. The people received him
with enthusiasm wherever he appeared ; and it is
worthy of notice that he laid great stress on the
efficacy of Holy Water. He taught the people of
Montecalieri to use it when hail and storms
threatened to destroy their vineyards, 2 just as in
later years he instructed the inhabitants of Chin
chilla in Spain to use Holy Water as a remedy
against locusts and other pests, sprinkling the
ground and houses with it while invoking the Holy
    Name of Jesus.

There is a Blessing of Water for the Sick in Honor of St. Vincent Ferrer in the Roman Ritual.

    I approve of this action.

Readers: Please IGNORE all my postings here. I was a recent convert and fell into errors, even heresy for which hopefully my ignorance excuses. These include rejecting the "rhythm method," rejecting the idea of "implicit faith," and being brieflfy quasi-Jansenist. I also posted occasions of sins and links to occasions of sin, not understanding the concept much at the time, so do not follow my links.

  • Thanks Rosemary.

Here it is in the unofficial English:

BLESSING OF WATER FOR THE SICK IN HONOR OF ST. VINCENT FERRER

(Formerly reserved to the same Order)

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All: Who made heaven and earth.

P: Blessed be the name of the Lord.

    All: Both now and forevermore.

    P: Lord, heed my prayer.
All: And let my cry be heard by you.
P: The Lord be with you.
All: May He also be with you.

    Let us pray.
We humbly appeal to your majesty, O Lord, asking that as you once
blessed the rock in the desert, letting a copious flow of water
come forth when Moses struck it twice with his rod, thus
typifying by this double stroke the mystery of your passion and
the two wooden beams of the cross; so now you may again hallow
with your bounteous blessing this water by the mystery of the
same holy cross. And let every sick person who drinks of it or is
sprinkled with it forthwith experience the healing effect of your
    blessing; through Christ our Lord.
    All: Amen.

I bless this water in the name of God + the Father almighty, who
created this pleasing element for man's use ennobling it by His
wondrous power to wash away the stains of both body and soul; to
be drink for the thirsty cool refreshment for those suffering
from the heat; a means of travel for seafarers; and who in water
and by the water in the universal deluge--when the cataracts of
heaven poured down rain for forty days and forty nights, yet
sparing the lives of the eight people in the Ark--prefigured the
sacrament of the New Covenant. May He now bless + and hallow +
this water, so that by the invocation of His holy name and that
of St. Vincent, it may heal the sick, strengthen the infirm,
cheer the downcast, purify the unclean, and give full well-being
to those who seek it; in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
+ and of the Holy Spirit.
    All: Amen.

The priest, touching the vessel of water with a relic or image of
    St. Vincent, says:

    Let us pray.

Lord, hear our entreaties, and by the merits of St. Vincent,
whose relic (or image) we apply to it, pour out your constant
blessing on this element, water, and let it be a health-giving
drink to those who use it.
    All: Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy
    Spirit.
    All: Amen.

This sign of the cross should be traced with the relic or image.
    Then the priest says;

Antiphon: May St. Vincent be with us in the twilight of life to
lead us on the sure path to Christ.

P: Pray for us, St. Vincent.

All: That we may be worthy of Christ's promise.

    Let us pray.
God, who has granted that a multitude of people acknowledge your
name through the preaching of your confessor, Vincent; we beg you
that it be our lot to have Him as our reward in heaven whom he
announced on earth as the Judge who is to come; through Christ
    our Lord.
    All: Amen.
    Sincerely,

    Shin

You are very welcome, Shin and thank you for posting this St. Vincent Ferrer Holy Water Blessing!  It is very handy to have the Roman Ritual as a reference manual.

  •  :laugh1: Can't go without those vineyards.

So what I'm getting is that he was particularly devoted to the use of Holy Water so it eventually led to having blessed water dedicated to him. Thank you!
