  • It is best to give children a good Catholic environment and foundation in perhaps a place like St. Marys, Kansas, but then again, what should Catholic families do if they don't live in such a place? Plus, don't we need to combat the world and not run away from it? I'm not opposed to there being a St. Marys. I'm trying to have a better understanding of how a Catholic family in the SSPX could still do well even if it does not live in St. Marys, Kansas.

  • Too many people have moved for the wrong reasons.

Imo, to relocate for the Mass (or a supposedly Catholic environment), often leaving a good job to do so, is a mistake.  God can give His grace when, where, how, and to whom He chooses.

  • Btw, there are no Catholic families in the SSPX.  It is a sacerdotal fraternity.

  • Well, yes, technically, the SSPX is a priestly fraternity, or society of apostolic life, but in a certain sense families and laypeople attending Masses and involved with the SSPX are in the SSPX.

  • Absolutely! There is no reason to assume that just because a community of "trads" is larger that it is more beneficial to live there, or that those living in less concentrated areas are any less capable of raising a good home. I would never move to a massive trad community like that, mostly because from what I hear off many of those who live there, it can become extremely parochial and "better than your neighbour". I've experienced something similar on a smaller scale and want nothing to do with it. We should be able to provide good Catholic homes and families regardless of whether there are a hundred other similar families around us or not!

Of course there are mega benefits of the Kansas-type set-up but contrary to what some of the trads who have grown up there all their lives think, there really is traditional life outside Pleasantville.

Edited to add: I agree that the SSPX is a priestly fraternity and that the laypeople are not entitled to the name "SSPX" as such, but there are some laypeople who are entitled to it, namely those members of the Societies 3rd Order.

  • I consider the atmosphere of such a place as St. Marys. It probably has imperfections, but I consider especially the educational aspect of it. I mean I don't know how many parents would want to homeschool their children, and not every traditional Catholic family involved with the SSPX is nearby a SSPX school.
