  • I want to have one of the larger 6-8" St. Benedict medals blessed to hang above my door as I have read others have done. Should it be hung on the interior or exterior of the door? Which side should face outward, the side with the seal, or the side with the image of St. Benedict? Does it matter? Should I put one over the back door too, or is one enough? Anything else I should know about the subject? Thanks, 1MT

  • I have never heard of this practice.  I have inserted or buried a St. Benedict medal in the foundation of every house I have lived in.  My children have as well.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • I'm not too familiar with all the practices, although my friend recommended to put them over the doorways as you are saying. I don't think it matters inward or outward, since it would not effect the blessing.

I don't know if this will be of interest to you, but I just got one for my mother. I got her the 8" St. Benedict's Crucifix with the olive wood inlay.

As we move into our new (well, really old) home soon, I will do the same. Thank you.

As for over the front door (externally), we always have had the St. Anthony Brief.

  • We just have the small ones tucked in the corner of each window sill and on top of each door frame.  How nice to have one that will be so visible.

Your link is to the Mary Immaculate Queen crucifix store page.

They have a good selection of some very nice crucifixes......................

    THIS ONE is especially attractive:

St. Benedict Crucifix: Silver with Olive Wood Inlay - 8"

    $35.50

Every home should have an image of our Crucified Savior
in a prominent place. Experience the protection of St. Benedict
with this medium size crucifix, perfect for smaller rooms.

        CR06-CX202BEN
8" inch Silver Cross with Olive Wood Inlay
        Silver Corpus
        Gift Boxed

I can't help but wonder about this one.  The description says "Silver with Olive Wood Inlay."  It doesn't say "silver tone" but rather "silver."  Merchants who sell products that are not really made of silver, or are silver plated, can get into trouble for misrepresentation.  The olive wood inlay is believable, but for only $35, how could the metal be precious metal (silver)?  An 8" tall crucifix like this would have about 2 or more ounces of silver in it, currently worth over $60 just for the raw material, and not including the workmanship or the inlays.

Therefore, the material cannot be "silver" at all, but perhaps silver plated.

Ironically, other crucifixes on the same page have "pewter" or "pewter figure," but this one is indexed as "silver figure."  On the order page, as copied here, it says "Silver Corpus."  Even if the corpus weighs a half ounce, still that's over $10 in silver material alone.  Most St. Benedict crucifixes like this are at least $60, even if the metal is pewter or stainless steel.

If this is really what they say it is, it's being offered for less than half price!

Can you say, SenzaDubio, how much this crucifix you got for your mother weighs?  Can you compare it to the weight, for example, of a (paper) cup of water?  Or can you use a postal scale?

  • I have a smaller St Benedict crucifix on the outside of my apt door.  I also have crucifixs and St Benedict medals by every window/door in my apt.
    Let's make it 1959

  • I don't have a scale handy. You can always send the sister's an email inquiring about the products. Aside from how much is silver or not, the product itself is well made, and great detail of Our Lord. I would of paid more for it. Most of their products seem inexpensive or at price.

  • The merchant is either saying 'silver' as the coloration, or it's plate. I'd guess the former as more likely.

    Could be 'nickel silver' too.

Of course it can't be solid silver, it's too inexpensive. You'll find things called 'silver' in shops everywhere just because of the coloration.

    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • Silver is also the name of a color, not only the name of a metal.

Thanks for these replies.  I know a merchant who got sued for a ridiculous amount because he displayed something as "silver" and it was not really silver but only looked like silver.

There are laws regarding these things, and there are people out there looking to make a profit by making trouble.  When it comes to Jєωelry, especially, it's an issue, and these crucifixes could be in a stretch, considered as at least costume Jєωelry.

It seemed noteworthy to me that this one cross is the only one called "silver" while the others are called "pewter" and the like.

Keep in mind that there is a special blessing for St. Benedict medals, and normally only a Benedictine priest can do that.  There are other priests, however, who have been given the faculty of providing the blessing.  You should ask the priest if he has the faculty, and if he doesn't know what you're talking about or if he says it doesn't matter, then I'd suppose it's possible you wouldn't be getting the St. Benedict Blessing from him, even if he assures you that you are.  You would have a blessed medal but it wouldn't be a medal with the St. Benedict Medal Blessing.  You should find a priest who knows about this and can tell you, "Yes, I have been given the faculty for the St. Benedict Medal blessing."

As hard as it might be to come by such a blessing, you should never offer your medal for sale, because just OFFERING it for sale makes the blessing null.  If anyone says these medals are for sale but they're already blessed, that's a lie, because they are NO LONGER blessed because they're offered for sale.

The only way to get around that is to have them offered for a DONATION.  That means that someone might take a medal without paying the recommended amount for it, but that has to be okay, because it's a DONATION, not a sales price.

  • If you're not a sede, the faculty to bless St. Benedict medals was given by Paul VI along with the other blessings reserved to religious orders after 1964. If you're a sede, well what priest has any special jurisdiction to bless the medal, if not supplied jurisdiction which would cover sacramentals as well as the sacraments.

Secondly, the monks in Silver City sell the medals of all sizes. They also have available a HUGE medal that can be hung on a wall. Contact them at:
