  • For instance, most network television is pretty banal (such as soap operas, sitcoms, "made for TV" series on cable) -- yet some modern shows can be quite well done and exciting (that is, appealing to human nature)

A lot of properly termed "Rock music" is objectively ugly and I have no problem avoiding it. But some "pop" music actually has a melody and lyrics, and I find it enjoyable, even though the theme is worldly and I generally avoid listening to it.

It's an interesting topic, I think.

  • At my home, we have watched on television often shows that involve mysteries and suspense. They can be interesting, but then there can be very much often the problem of images that come up in those shows and values promoted. Also, I don't really mind so much seeing "rated G" or children's movies, except that even in those, especially now, one can find some immodesty and bad ideas. For example, recently I saw the movie Ratatouille. The main character of the rat seems all cute and funny, but aside from that there is implied the idea that the late famous chef to whom he honors had a son out of wedlock. Plus, the woman who works in the restaurant is shown to be all tough and wears pants sadly.

  • It's all those subtle errors you have to beware of -- the images they put forth for the ideal woman, the ideal man --

as well as the ideal child, the ideal relationship with God (usually non-existent) and a hundred other falsehoods.

They put things forth as a "given" -- something that isn't argued in the movie, like it's accepted by all. It gets you used to the image they're trying to portray.

  • Hence, it's really BEST to stay away from watching TV.

But then again, it's always hard to break away family ties. They think you're being bossy whenever you object. What a hard struggle for us who wants complete holiness of life.
