    • “This news comes from Puerto Rico:
    June 10, 2017 the Pan Orthodox of St. Spyridon in Trujillo Alto, PR community were received into the Catholic Church as a Greco Catholic Byzantine community under the “Omophorion” (jurisdiction) of the Latin Archbishop, Metropolitan Roberto González, O.F.M.
     
    The welcome ceremony was presided over by the Vicar General of the Archdiocese, father Alberto Figueroa Morales on behalf of the Archbishop. The priests and parishioners made the profession of faith and during the liturgy were commemorated the Supreme Pontiff, Francisco and metropolitan Robert.
     
    This makes the community of San Espiridión the first Eastern Catholic in Puerto Rico community. Welcome to the priests and parishioners of San Espiridión to the Catholic Church. They will continue celebrating the Divine Liturgy and sacred mysteries according to the Byzantine tradition. The continuous liturgy in the Church Slavonic language, English and Spanish… following the liturgical calendar Julian (old calendar).
     
    The community was under the authority of the Ecuмenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (Istanbul). Now it has been under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of San Juan of Puerto Rico. Probably then pass to belong to any of the Slavonic Byzantine Eastern Catholic churches, although they continue to remain under the local Latin metropolitan authority.

    • Following the liberation of Mosul, Iraq, from the hands of the Islamic State, Christians are cautiously returning to the city. And as they return, so does the Mass.
    Fr. Luis Montes, a priest of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, celebrated Mass earlier this month at Saint George Monastery. The priest traveled to Mosul to record part of a docuмentary entitled Guardianes de la Fe (Guardians of the Faith), which seeks to show the reality of life for Christians in Iraq and Syria.
    In a video posted on the Amigos de Irak (Friends of Iraq) Facebook page, Fr. Montes said that the Mass was celebrated Aug. 9 – a month after Mosul’s liberation – on the feast day of St. Edith Stein, who died a martyr in a nαzι cσncєnтrαтισn cαмρ.
    The priest said it was “a great gift of God” to be able to celebrate the feast day of a martyr in the monastery, which “surely gave many martyrs to the Church.”
    Pointing to the damage to the monastery entrance, he said that he believes the lower level may have been “used as a prison at some time, (as) the Christians left their names there written on the walls as a witness.”
    Located in the eastern part of the city, the monastery was badly damaged by ISIS militants.
    “Rubble everywhere, the stone facing on walls knocked off, all the religious statues destroyed,” Fr. Montes said. “The grotto of the Virgin Mary destroyed…Crosses set into the walls were chopped off with sledgehammers so no trace would remain of anything that is Christian, of anything that is Jesus Christ.”
    In the chapel where they celebrated Mass, the altar was stripped of its marble adornments, and the walls had been damaged.
    The experience of celebrating the Eucharist amidst so much devastation was awe-inspiring, Fr. Montes said.
    “In this place, which has been attacked for being Christian, the contemplation of the Mystery of the Cross, which is renewed in Holy Mass, had so much power,” he reflected.
    “Some priests later told the young people that accompanied me that they believed that this was the first Mass” celebrated within the city of Mosul – which was among the areas hardest hit by ISIS – in the last three years, he added. “It's really a gift from God.”
    The priest said that he offered the Mass for Europe, “which suffers from having turned away from Our Lord God, so that the blood of the martyrs here in the Middle East may stir Europe, touch it, so that it awakens.”
    The sight of so much desecration is painful, Fr. Montes acknowledged, and it is even more painful to think of the hatred for Christ that motivated the attacks.
    But at the same time, he said, “there is such a beautiful satisfaction in knowing that one is serving a persecuted people.”

    His allegory isn't without basis. Roberto Gonzalez Nieves is an adversary of the Catholic Church and all that is holy. He's certainly an enemy of the Church's Traditions. Politically, he's a socialist, and a noisy one at that.
    So those Orthodox need extra prayers, Gonzalez will try to destroy them.

    • The vicar-general of the Prelature of Marawi and several other Catholic hostages taken by militants inspired by the so-called Islamic State (IS) are still alive after more than three months of fighting in the southern Philippine City.
    At a press conference announcing the retaking of St. Mary's Cathedral, Major General Carlito Galvez, commander of government forces in Marawi, denied social media reports that terrorist gunmen may have spirited Father Teresito Soganub out of the city.
    The military presented gold-plated religious items including chalices and crucifix recovered by troops from the cathedral, which rebels abandoned on Aug. 25.
    Some of the items were damaged when the terrorists stormed the church on May 23, the first day of the conflict.
    Marilyn Suganob- Ginnivan, a younger sister of the priest, said the family was glad to hear the information.
    "We are continuously praying for his safety and the other hostages. May God spare them [from death]," she told ucanews.com in a text message.
    "In two or three weeks' time," Galvez said the military expects the city to return to normal, as the battle zone has narrowed to just "400 to 600 square meters."
    Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, spokesperson of Joint Task Force Marawi, said the cathedral needs repairing after many bullets struck the building.
    "It's not totally wrecked. There was damage to the walls [from bullets]," she added.
    Earlier, IS-linked websites released a video showing fighters toppling over statues and desecrating icons before trying to set fire to the cathedral.
    Marawi Bishop Edwin dela Pena condemned the desecration of the cathedral, branding it a "blasphemous" act.
    The military also on Aug. 25 announced the retaking of Marawi's Grand Mosque and Islamic Center hours before President Rodrigo Duterte arrived to visit troops.
    Three soldiers were wounded advancing on the mosque, officials said. The military reported no enemy casualties but on Aug. 28 said troops had discovered three booby traps, one ѕυιcιdє bomb suit, two rocket propelled grenade launchers; and a black flag with the IS insignia.
    Soldiers also found a tunnel inside the mosque, which rebels could have used to store ammunition.
