  • Sociologists from Ohio State University have found that children from large families have markedly lower divorce rates.

The equation that emerged after a 40-year study, involving a sample of 57,000 American adults, was simple: The more siblings you had as a child, the less likely you were to be divorced as an adult. The researchers don’t offer an explanation for this phenomenon—in fact they seem to be stumped—but they know it’s not because the children from large families don’t marry. On the contrary, they’re more likely to marry, and more likely to stay married, than their small-family counterparts.

We already know that among married couples who don’t use contraceptives, the rate of divorce approaches zero. Obviously these couples are more likely to have multiple children. So by eschewing contraceptives, a married couple is taking a huge step to guard against divorce—not only for themselves, but for their children as well.

  • I'm gaining the impression poche that you never read traditional Catholic news sources, because you never post links to them instead of from these sources?

I've tend to be very reserved in posting links myself, because of the responsibility involved if the link causes harm to someone, or has some evil content. This would especially apply to the secular, but in general to all content.

    Do we know this?

  • I am interested in the divorce rates of novus ordo Catholics and Traditional Catholics (SSPX is the largest group so we would need to cull statistics from them).

  • Re: Article

The reasons for it should be blatantly obvious.
The children from large families are conditioned more by the natural world and will become more adept at manipulating their environment to their advantage. Instead of these ridiculous "flings" which are essentially rooted in an incompetence in those who participate, the children from large families will be more in union with their nature, more adept, more capable of spotting bad long term partners and will choose those with whom they can be successful in long term bonds.

  • Even in a completely worldly large family, kids would have to learn to get along with others, demonstrate some compassionate understanding, and share much more that a small family.  That alone would account for some measure of improved marriage rates.

  • School children from large families are better behaved, have more friends, get along with others, and are more apt to be emotionally well-adjusted than their small family or only-child peers.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

I totally agree with this statement.  Only children can grow up to be very self-centered adults.  All the big families I know have really cheerful and helpful children.  They seem very comfortable around adults also whereas "only" kids always seem sullen and need to be entertained.

  • I haven't seen the children from large families are better behaved or needing less entertainment - sometimes just the opposite. It would make sense in many ways - like what Sig said -  but it's not what I've seen over time. I think it depends on the parents character and how they discipline and raise them more than anything.

One thing I definitely have seen is they are far less picky eaters as a group!  :ready-to-eat:

  • I have to agree with Tiffany. I haven't seen the article to be true in my experiences.
