  • Are there any sinful hair styles? Because saints often refer to a quote about the merits of the women (Cor. I?).
Also, a long time ago Frances made a question about hair dyeing, etc.

  • I  wouldn't allow a daughter under 12 to wear her hair down, it would be braided or in a loose pony tail if possible.

    1 Corinthians 11:14

"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that a man indeed, if he nourish his hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman nourish her hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering."

    1 Timothy 2:9-10

"In like manner women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire, But as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works."

Dying hair is offensive to God:

    Romans 9:20

"O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it: Why hast thou made me thus?"

    Make-Up

    Jeremias 4:30

"But when thou art spoiled what wilt thou do? though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, and paintest thy eyes with stibic stone, thou shalt dress thyself out in vain: thy lovers have despised thee, they will seek thy life."

I hope you aren't equating some other mother's contrary personal preference with a sinful act!

So every man or woman who looks in the mirror and mutters, "Good Lord, why do I look so horrid" or "If only I had a real chin" or "Why is my [fill in the blank] so [choose one: (A) small; (B) large; (C) unattractive]?" is halfway down the road to damnation? Puritanism, anyone?*

But seriously, folks, if bringing a little proportion and common sense to bear on such innocuous matters of daily life now gets characterized as sinful or immoral, we all should pull up stakes and buy a one-way ticket on the Burqaville Express.

  • Claudel, is it your take that anything goes in hairstyles?

St. Paul does say that women should have long hair; and some of the men's hair styles I see do strike me as vain and effeminate. I do not have authorities or high-sounding theories to back this up, but I don't think it's purely my prejudice speaking.

  • I think Miley Cyrus' hair styles are provocative and sinful.  They aren't so shocking because in mainstream America who is there to offend?  We trads generally avoid pop culture, knowing it to be really just trash.

I never see offensive hair styles in the SSPX chapel in St. Louis but that's par for the course.

Lady Gaga is a circus act.  Her entire style is sinful.

'While Saint Peter and Saint Paul forbid women to curl their hair, they condemn with even greater reason this sort of behavior in men, who, having naturally far less inclination than women to such vanities, ought to reject them all the more resolutely and be much less inclined to yield to them.'

  • Some folks and their habits and attire are so completely bad they don't even need to be mentioned.

If taken literally, a woman ought not cut her hair or braid it, ever.  If I never trimmed my hair, it would be a long string of broken, frazzled split ends to the top of my legs.  There would be no way to make it remotely attractive.  My options would be to wear a nun's veil all the time, an Amish style covering, or a wig, all of which would generate undue attention to myself, the exact opposite of modesty.
My school has a "dress code" that includes hair cuts and styles.  The guidelines are that hair must be age and gender appropriate, clean, neat, not a distraction to the wearer or to others who see it.  Female teachers are permitted to color their hair provided it is a natural color.  There is only one male teacher and he has the fortune of being entirely bald!  The school reserves the right to impose individual judgements.  For example, a first grader whose hair attachments kept coming off was no longer permitted to wear them.  As a teacher, I do not have time to braid a little girl's hair everyday!  By day's end, she often had a dozen or more loose attachments in her desk.  It became a third floor joke about finding Shamika's braids on the floor in the hall and on the stairs.  An eighth grade boy arrived in September looking more like the shaggy dog than Justin Bieber.  Another boy returned from Christmas vacation resembling an eight year old "Mr. T." minus the bling.  The parents sign a contract agreeing to uphold school standards.  In all of the cases, the weird hair vanished.
I would think of hairstyles in this manner; if your hair is an "issue" you need to change it.  What would be said of Our Lord's "hairstyle" today?
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

    A style I actually like.
I think men look more "normal" with grown hair, both facial and on their head.  The soldier cut is pretty scary looking - which is one of the reasons they are such - especially on little boys.

    I agree!  :dancing-banana:
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Those with arthritis or shoulder pain can have a hard time brushing and detangling a  head of long hair, using styling tools, etc in order to make it attractive. Also it is my own personal opinion that after a certain age, long hair is not so attractive on some women as it once was. So, last week I left mine on the floor of the salon, and feel much better. I don't think it was a sin.

Maybe it's what you grew up with.  My father was in the Navy, so I grew up with a man's military cut being "normal." As a young girl, I was frightened of bearded men!  Later on, I associated long hair and unshaven faces with hippies.  To this day, my 84 year old Dad has a military cut, only it is white instead of black!  I don't like long hair on men, although I've come to like beards if they are not too long and very neat.

It seems to me that Padre Pio, as a four or five year old, was greatly impressed by the long brown beard of a mendicant Franciscan.  He told his mother he wanted to be a monk so that he could have a long beard!  His mother laughed and replied, "What do you know about beards?  You're a little boy!"

  • I don't know if I'm more surprised at the commonsensical questions asked on this forum, or the ridiculousness of some of the responses which seem to validate them with a rediculously strict, unCatholic mind.
