If taken literally, a woman ought not cut her hair or braid it, ever. If I never trimmed my hair, it would be a long string of broken, frazzled split ends to the top of my legs. There would be no way to make it remotely attractive. My options would be to wear a nun's veil all the time, an Amish style covering, or a wig, all of which would generate undue attention to myself, the exact opposite of modesty.
My school has a "dress code" that includes hair cuts and styles. The guidelines are that hair must be age and gender appropriate, clean, neat, not a distraction to the wearer or to others who see it. Female teachers are permitted to color their hair provided it is a natural color. There is only one male teacher and he has the fortune of being entirely bald! The school reserves the right to impose individual judgements. For example, a first grader whose hair attachments kept coming off was no longer permitted to wear them. As a teacher, I do not have time to braid a little girl's hair everyday! By day's end, she often had a dozen or more loose attachments in her desk. It became a third floor joke about finding Shamika's braids on the floor in the hall and on the stairs. An eighth grade boy arrived in September looking more like the shaggy dog than Justin Bieber. Another boy returned from Christmas vacation resembling an eight year old "Mr. T." minus the bling. The parents sign a contract agreeing to uphold school standards. In all of the cases, the weird hair vanished.
I would think of hairstyles in this manner; if your hair is an "issue" you need to change it. What would be said of Our Lord's "hairstyle" today?
