SYDNEY (AP) — Two strong earthquakes struck off the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea late Sunday, a U.S. monitor said. There were no immediate reports of casualty or damage.

The first quake, a magnitude 6.9, struck around 11 p.m. local time 325 miles (525 kilometers) northeast of the capital, Port Morseby. It struck 35 miles (57 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The second, a magnitude 6.8, struck a half-hour later in the same area, at a depth of 31 miles (50 kilometers).

Indonesia issued a tsunami warning but lifted it soon after. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an alert.

    Please pray for my soul.

  • Another one!

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A powerful earthquake has shaken an Aleutian Island region of Alaska but there is no threat of a tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 6.7-magnitude quake struck at 9:56 p.m. Saturday and was centered in the Bering Sea about 110 miles northeast of Dutch Harbor or 930 miles west of Anchorage. The quake hit about 21 miles beneath the seabed.

Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says there was no danger of a tsunami from the temblor.

USGS geophysicist Jessica Sigala says residents of the Dutch Harbor, the nearest sizable community, reported feeling a "weak shaking" from the quake.

A magnitude 6 quake is capable of causing severe damage.

    Please pray for my soul.

  • There have been many others, but these are the bigger ones lately.

    TODAY

    July 23, 2010 | 5:38 p.m.
(CNN) -- A series of four strong earthquakes spanning just over an hour struck the Philippines' Moro Gulf on Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Three of the four earthquakes had magnitudes between 7.3 and 7.6; the other came in at a 5.4 magnitude. The first quake struck at 6:08 a.m. local time and the fourth hit at 7:15 a.m. The last quake ran the deepest at 382 miles.

The epicenters of the quakes were about 62 miles off the coastal city of Cotabato and roughly 590 miles southeast of Manila, the capital.

    Please pray for my soul.

  • I saw that last night, Myrna.  Also that big dam catastrophe in Iowa today.

Is anyone else getting almost numb from this news?  We've known this must happen, and now that it is...may Christ have mercy on us sinners.

  • There have been a LOT of bigger (up-side of mag. 5) earthquakes in various other parts of the world, sometimes in unpopulated regions, that go unreported by the media. Recently there have also been a lot of 6s and 7s going on. That's pretty serious stuff. But because most of it happens in other parts of the world or out in the middle of the ocean somewhere, we don't hear squat.

I watch the earthquakes pretty closely, and have for the last year or so. We don't hear about MOST of what goes on out there. I guess what's on television or what movie star is in trouble now,  is more important to some people.

Curiously, ever since that one really big quake by California, that area really has not quieted down completely. Every once in a while, there's another big "burp" of quake activity around there. It's my understanding that when the last "big one" hit CA, it began with a much more moderate quake... then BOOM, the big one hit, and shot up through CA, pretty much from around that same neck of the woods.

Seeing more activity in the EASTERN part of the US is kind of worrisome, though. They may be tiny tremors, but they're unusual as far as I know. (Those around the bottom of IL).
I renounce any and all of my former views against what the Church through Pope Leo XIII said, "This, then, is the teaching of the Catholic Church ...no one of the several forms of government is in itself condemned, inasmuch as none of them contains anythi

A major earthquake of 7.4 magnitude hit New Zealand, triggering widespread damage in Christchurch.
    Please pray for my soul.
