  • I am a sedevacantist but I frequent the SSPX sacarments. I follow the 1917 code of cannon law and the pre-vatican II rules of Pius XII. I don't eat meat on fridays. In the SSPX, I have heard priests say that you are supposed to abstain from meat on fridays, but you can do an alternative penance if you wish. They base this alternative penance option from conciliar popes. Since I reject the conciliar popes, I  feel they had no authority to do this.

Im going to a military style boot camp soon. Intense physical activity. Im worried that some fridays I may have to eat meat there in order to get the calories needed to survive. Is this a mortal sin under these conditions?

Although I abstain from meat on fridays, I often ask myself if eating meat on fridays is really a mortal sin that could send me to hell. Before Vatican II, did priests tell people that they would go to hell if they purposely ate a steak on a friday?

  • It has always been acceptable to eat meat on Fridays if your health requires it.  In conditions like this, if there is no nutritionally adequate substitute available, it seems like it would be okay.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Catholics have to have a dispensation  to eat meat on Fridays.  Go to your priest and explain the situation to him, and ask to be dispensed.  You can always  eat the side dishes offered.  Most of the time they are meatless.  Have to make sacrifices.
Yes, its still a mortal sin to eat meat on Fridays.  The church's laws dont change with the times.

  • Was eating meat on Friday ever a mortal sin?

If so, was it because you basically had to despise the Catholic Church to do so?

  •  This sounds like cafeteria sede vacantism - - it's a mortal sin to eat meat on Fridays.

"Military style" boot camp is not the same as our US Military, which the Church would recognise as dispensing soldiers from certain obligations in times of war.

Great Catholics have endured far more rigorous fasts and survived.  Best of luck at  boot camp;  fasting will make you tough.

Yes, I think the rule of thumb was eating more than two ounces.

  • Considering that Catholic soldiers in the past have endured just as strenuous physical activity as soldiers today, I'm sure they managed somehow.

:applause:  We have been without ligit authority for so long, that some are forgetting the faith!   Not eating meat on Friday is the abstinence law!  Abstinence will also make you tough!

Had a conversation just the other day and was told by someone (not a religious) that it is not a sin to eat mean on Friday in Mexico.

I was surprised to hear that!

  • I was going to tell you that in boot camp there will always be plenty of meetless foodstuffs that will enable you to keep up your strength so there will be no problem.

But then, as I read the following posts and realized you said "military style boot camp", I don't know.  I don't even know what that means.

If this is a voluntary thing, then you had better voluntarily abstain from meat on Fridays.  If this is an involuntary thing, then you should try your absolutely best.

In any event, if you do end up eating meat on a Friday, confess the sin before receiving Holy Communion.

Abstinence from meat is a universal law of the Church.  The Conciliar authorities changed the law for the NewChurch.  In the Conciliar church, abstinence from meat may be changed to some other form of penance.

This came about because some of the Oceana bishops raised the abstinence issue during the Vatican 2 council.  Their concern was that abstaining from meat is not a penitential sacrifice in many Pacific island nations as they eat very little meat anyway.  On the other hand, in some of those countries, abstaining from seafood would be a penitential sacrifice.  I don't know whether this ever made the actual Vatican 2 docuмents, but the Conciliar authorities made the change to allow bishops' conferences to request a substitute for the Friday abstinence which the Vatican authorities always approved.

In the United States, the bishops made haste to change the abstinence rules outside Lent and allow the faithful to substitute some other form of good work.  Of course, the lifting of abstinence rules was proclaimed from the housetops. I challenge anyone to find a layman alive that remembers the substitution ever even being mentioned at the same time let alone solemnly taught.

What started out as a valid--a possibly a positively good--idea degenerated into sloth since the bishops looked to relax all spiritual goods rather than use this exception only for good reasons.  Oceana had good reasons.  Most of the rest of the world did not.

The same thing may have happened in Mexico, but this is a Conciliar rule, not a Catholic one.

I found this in another post by parentsfortruth.

Yesterday, I decided that since the Chiesa Viva put out in 2008, regarding the plot against the Church regarding Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ, was worth my time to read. I bothered to go on Google Translate, and, paragraph by paragraph, I translated it. I wanted to share with you the 33 points in which the Mason bishops were directed to destroy things, little by little, and their attempts to quell dissenters, and marginalize them by painting the people that disagree with them as "disobedient."

This is the translation from Italian to English. If you would like to google translate it yourself, here's the source:

    http://www.chiesaviva.com/la%20massoneria.pdf

A "plan Masonic" for the destruction of the Catholic Church

Directives of the Grand Master of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ to the Bishops Masons:
effective from 1962 (update of Vatican II) reworked in 1993 as a progressive plan for the final stage.

All Masons employed in the Catholic Church should accept them and implement them.

    1. Permanently remove any statue from the church, beginning with those of St. Michael the Archangel, patron the Catholic Church, saying that (they) distract (from the) adoration of Christ.

    2. Remove the exercises penitential season of Lent, such as abstinence from meat on Fridays and also fasting. Prevent any act of self-denial. In their place, they must
be supported acts of joy, happiness and "love of neighbor. "You say that Christ has earned for us all, therefore, all human endeavor is dangerous, and could even
seem to be a lack of trust in God. Tell everyone that must take seriously the concerns for their health. Encourage the consumption of meat, especially pork.
