  • My kids, and I celebrated Saint Nicholas yesterday! Everyone got  a little orange, and a sweetie. We watched a bunch of different shows on the Saint, and enjoyed reading about his good works.

I was wondering what do all of you do to celebrate the Christmas season? Are there any Catholic traditions you keep?

Sunday was the first Sunday in Advent so we pulled out our “A Christ Centered Christmas” book. I’m always curious as to what others do for it, and to learn Catholic Traditions I can add.

  • We celebrate St. Nicholas, too.  The kids put out their shoes the night before, and dad writes each one a note, pretending to be The Saint Himself.  They get a real kick out of it, wondering "How does he know?!"

We also are trying the 25 days of a spiritual Christmas crib (from Finer Femininity website) this year as well.  I think it's something we'll continue in future years.

And of course, the Advent wreath!

Usually we just spend our time baking cookies and getting gifts ready.  Then, on Christmas Eve, my husband and children go get the tree and we decorate it and the house with Christmas carols playing (finally!--we don't play them until now)...we open our Christmas cards in the evening after supper.  Then we go to Midnight Mass and go to bed.  We only do stockings and grandparent gifts on Christmas Day, preferring to keep as much of the spiritual as we can.  We celebrate Epiphany on Jan 6 by exchanging gifts then.  We try to do something for each of the 12 Days of Christmas as possible.  It works for us!

  • I forgot to mention! On the first night of advent we also wrap a baby Jesus doll in a blanket, and put Him in the middle of our advent wreath. We also set a permanent plate, fork, spoon, napkin, and cup as a sign we have room for Mary and Joseph.

I love the idea of doing gifts on the Epiphany! What recipes do you like to do, Jvk?

  • When we were kids, 1960, we made a crib from a oatmeal box. cut in half and save the ends. cut ends in half to enclose upper half and the other ends can be used for cradle under crib.  Decorate.  Have straw or yellow strips of paper.  Kids put in a strip/straw piece for every good deed.  On Christmas, this bed is a gift to the Child Jesus. Find a Christ child for the crib.

  • We do the straw sacrifice crib, too.

As far as recipes, pretty much Christmas cookies that we put up in the freezer until Christmas Day.  Fudge :) :) :) of course!  Among others.

What a good idea about a baby Jesus in the Advent wreath, and extra place settings for the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph.  Hmm....

  • I think all Catholics observe that feast day too. We, also just had the feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception! My family, and I had a special diner to celebrate it.
