  • Is there are correct way in the direction of use of Rosary beads?  For example, I tend to move in a counter-clockwise fashion, much like this picture shows:

However, someone recently told me that you should always go clockwise.  Is there such a rule?

  • My Mother always told me, "Hold on to the traditions which you have been taught." I was always taught counter-clockwise not only from her, but from my earliest catechisms.

That's interesting.  I was never taught to go one way or the other, counter-clockwise is just the way I tended to do.  Do you recall a reason for being told to do it that way?

  • If you're right-handed, the tendency would be to go counter-clockwise and clockwise if left-handed.  I'm right-handed and couldn't do clockwise if I tried ... not without just flipping the Rosary (medal and crucifix orientation) backwards.  I don't really think it matters; what's important is to pray the rosary with devotion.

  • I pray it everyday, counterclockwise was how I was taught.

However, many times I'm praying it driving (quiet no radio) for reflection or doing labor task, say to help a family member. I don't use a physical a rosary, just one in my head.

Worth noting since we're talking basics to skip the luminous mysteries since they weren't divinely given by Mary Herself and add the Fatima prayer after the glory be, (divinely given by Mary in 1917).

  • I've been taught to pray the counter-clockwise way all my life. Is this something my mother, and her mother, (and her mother?) taught her? I don't know. I know in this time of crisis, I'm going to hold on to what I've been taught. On the flip side, I don't think we will be judged on which way we follow the counting of the Hail Marys on the Rosary. Do we say the Rosary? Now, that's what's important.
