  • I was thinking about the feelings of romantic love and the influence of the devil. Looking back on my past life before my conversion it seems to me that some of the romantic attraction I felt for women was so irrational and destructive that it seems to me that it might have been demonic. Does the devil influence people to feel attracted to each other because he believes the attraction would lead to the damnation of the souls of those who are attracted to each other? This would help expllain why romantic attraction is sometimes so irrational and often destructive. And it would help explain why ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ men are attracted to other men and lesbians are attracted to other women, because these lustful feelings are inspired by the devil to lead those souls to hell. Does the Church say anything about this?
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • This, from Catholic Harbor of Faith and Morals, might be helpful:

But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.

  • Romantic love is not a bad thing in itself. It keeps the world turning, as it were, provided that we remain faithful to Jesus Christ, determine always to do His Will, and depend on his holy Mother to help us to keep our resolve.

This is beautiful and fitting prayer is from Magdalena's link:

    Quote
Prayer to obtain a Victory over Temptations

My God, "cast me not away from Thy face" (Ps. 1. 13). I well know that Thou wilt never abandon me if I do not first abandon Thee. Alas! I fear this misfortune through the experience I already have of my own weakness. Lord, it is for Thee to give me the strength of which I am in need to withstand the assaults of hell. I ask this for the love of Jesus Christ. My Saviour, establish perpetual peace between me and Thee; establish an eternal and indissolvable union. To this end, give me Thy love. "He that loveth not, abideth in death" (1 John iii. 14). It is for Thee, O God of my soul! to deliver me from this miserable death. By that, bitter death which Thou didst endure for me, let me not again lose Thy friendship, O my Jesus! I love Thee more than all else, and hope to remain ever bound to Thee by the chains of love. I hope ever to live bound by them, both on earth and eternally in heaven.

O Mary! thou art the mother and dispenser of perseverance; it is from thee that I ask and hope for this great gift.

It is when we abandon Jesus that things go wrong.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • It has been a long time since I read this book, back in my youth, but it seemed to make a lot of sense then, but I can't remember everything, so there may be some info that is not Catholic, but it kind of got me thinking straight on what love should be.

I've wanted to return to it, but have never gotten the time, but it has much to say about this problem

Love in the Western World, by Denis De Rougemont.

Very detailed information on how romantic love took the the place of more traditional types of love.
