    Rites of the Catholic Church

    How many Rites are there in the Catholic Church.
    Looking it up ,, I find 5 Roman and 22 under "Eastern"  Is this right ? .

    How many of those are operating in the world today ?
    How many of the Those , Roman and Eastern were operating in the world validly to the end of the Reign of PPXII.  

    Maybe Matthew can help me out here,  or anyone else..

  • There is only one Roman rite.  There are other small western rites, like the Mozarabic or Ambrosian.  They are very similar to the Roman rite though, and it is not unresonable to class them together.


    22 Eastern rites seems a bit low, but it depends on how you divide them.  The Ruthernians and the Melkites are both Byzantine.  Are they part of one rite or two separate one? You can look at it either way.
