Religious Broadcasters' Study: Social Networks 'Actively Censoring Christian Viewpoints'

By Matthew Philbin | September 20, 2011 | 11:33

If we post this story on Facebook, will the company remove it? According to a new study from the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) and the American Center for Law and Justice, there's a good chance it will.

NRB conducted a study of "the practices of Apple and its iTunes App Store, Google, Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, as well as Internet service providers AT&T, Comcast and Verizon." Its conclusion: with the notable exception of Twitter, "social media websites are actively censoring Christian viewpoints.

Specifically, social media sites have proscribed any content critical of the ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ lifestyle and the gαy agenda, under the guise of banning "hate speech." Apple has in the past year removed two iPhone apps from it iTunes App Store. Facebook, which has collaborated with gαy & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD), "has indicated that it will delete all instances of content that it considers to be anti-ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ," according to NRB.

Google is a stand-out offender. Google for Non-Profits refuses to list "churches, ministries, and other faith groups that consider religion or sɛҳuąƖ orientation in their hiring practices," according to The New American. According to the Christian Post: "Google has also committed a number of free speech violations, the NRB report alleges. The world's most powerful search engine initially prohibited the English Christian Institute from purchasing space for an advertisement about abortion. It also allegedly blocked a Massachusetts pro-family website because of its conservative Christian content."

Unfortunately, Google's attitude is unsurprising. This past April, the Culture and Media Institute noted that, when Good Friday and Earth Day fell on the same day, Google chose to honor Gaia over Christ with its famous logo.

The company's stewardship of YouTube, the massively popular video site it owns, shows little regard for moral or family concerns. "BlueTube," a 2009 Special Report from CMI, found that although YouTube's guidelines stated it was "not for pornography or sɛҳuąƖly explicit content," there was plenty of sɛҳuąƖ material, including soft-core straight and gαy porn, all over the site. In fact, YouTube was widely used as a marketing vehicle for porn sites.

NRB stated it had invited the companies cited in its study to discuss their policies. Hopefully NRB has better luck with that than CMI had in 2009. Repeated attempts to get Google officials to comment on the "BlueTube" findings failed. An NRB official said, "We want to work with, not against, these companies as much as possible. But they've come out of the gate pretty hostile to people of faith."

  • @stevusmagnus:

We need to remember not to get too upset over these kinds of reports. Here's why:

    1) 'Religious Broadcasters', meaning the NRB, are usually pretty highly sensitive to these perceived 'snubs', but they are pretty unreasonable about what actually happens in cases like these. Come on... expecting Google, a GIANT corporation founded by and run by non-Christians, to honor Good Friday instead of Earth Day? Some of our friends at the NRB need a reality check, and fast!

    2) Traditional Roman Catholicism is NEVER represented in these 'actions', 'lawsuits' or any other kinds of publicity-hunting and rabble-rousing. What you're seeing is the whining of the so-called 'evangelical' crowd taking effect... after all, it's the prot heretics who spend the most money on their radio 'ministries', anyway.

What is REALLY going to change the way the media, the 'social media' and the world see the Faith? The growing presence of genuine sanctity among those who profess the Truth of the ages, the Faith of Jesus Christ and His Holy Church.

Let's also remember that we don't need to be lumped in with the other 'religious' broadcasters or other troublemakers in the media's eyes. We must remember that if we want to APPEAR separate, we must BE separate and not get entangled with the world's falsehoods.

St. Maximilian Kolbe, lover of the Immaculata, pray for us.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
This evil of heresy spreads itself. The doctrines of godliness are overturned; the rules of the Church are in confusion; the ambition of the unprincipled seizes upon places of authority; and the chief seat [the Papacy] is now openly proposed as a rewar

While it's true such complaining seems to show some lack of awareness of the very low position that Christianity now holds in this society, it is not "unreasonable" at all to expect "non-Christians" to honor Christ the King.  You seem to be showing way too much tolerance for them to talk about what is "reasonable" from "non-Christians."

Yes, Trad Catholics seem to be all to willing to accept with equanimity "non-Catholic" institutions.

As I've said before, I think most Trads would die for Jєωs and Israel before they would die for the Church and fellow Catholics.

Certainly they will stand for an SSPX half-truth with far more resolution than for a Catholic truth.

  • You misunderstand me greatly. I am not showing anyone any tolerance; I am not interested in supporting them, nor do I care if they recognize Christ. They are unconverted heathen secular humanists, ergo, they have no spiritual motivation to honor Christ, and I do not expect that from them.

AS far as I am concerned, the Jєωs and the Arabs can wipe each other off the face of the Earth IF WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THEIR 'holy war', insomuch as they each think their 'god' has given them the right to that tract of land.

As a fellow human being, I detest war, and my heart breaks for all of them. As a Christian, and as a supporter of Christ's ONE true Church, i.e. the True Faith, I care not a whit for their cause, nor their motivations. When they turn to God in repentance and confess Christ and are brought into His fold, then what 'side' they are on will matter to me.

As far as tolerating secular institutions is concerned, however, I think you would agree that instead of waiting for the heathen world to recognize Christ, traditional Catholics need to pool their own resources and not depend on the world's media to work for them.

That said, on the other hand, I DO remember as a child that the local NYC-area TV stations would have brief commercials making mention of various Holy Days of obligation, like the Feast of the Annunciation, etc. I suppose it was the Archdiocese that paid for them, but at least they were out there.

These days, I wouldn't trust a secular news outlet to recognize anything 'catholic' except their buddies in the NewVat. Wojtyla especially was a media darling, with all his 'kumbaya' theology and accommodations to the pagans he hung around with.

Anyway, again, while I will concede that perhaps the media COULD do more, I believe that it's the fault of the NewVat that we don't see more recognition of the Faith; the perverts and embezzlers have spoiled it for the Church.
