  • Check this picture posted on St. Gertrude the Great's website. Why would ladies, newly-confirmed, be wearing red zuchettos?

    http://www.sgg.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/20190608_115845.jpg
    "New soldiers of Christ"

    The caption wasn't very helpful:

"Witness as well yesterday’s Confirmations. Twenty Catholics, old and new, lost and returned, children and grownups, or just recently turned up by the Paraclete, lined up devoutly to be confirmed, strengthened as real Soldiers of Christ. I thank the Sisters for their help for Thursday’s Recollection, as we prepared our eight local youth for Confirmation. It was a delightful day, leading in to these Pentecostal days of grace, culminating in this morning’s First Holy Communion at the Pontifical Mass. Solemn ceremonies for so sacred and serious sacraments, which fill us with a simple
childlike joy. Our guest confirmands from all over make us rejoice evermore."

    Any thoughts?

  • Before VII, when confirmation was made, a red beanie was worn by females - red beanie and white robe.  At least, that is how it was in the archdiocese I grew up in.

What Archdiocese was this, if I may ask?

  • I have no recollections of wearing a zuchetto when I was confirmed with my 7th Grade Class in 1962.
I have seen zuchettos worn by novus ordo confirmations since the first one I witnessed in 1980.
I was hit with the constant temptation if this is the sign we are going Jєωιѕн.
At the confirmation in 1980 the music they played was the precision of drums. Made me think if I
was in the middle of Africa.

  • You will notice the girls have beanies on their heads.  Boys did not wear them.

I'm sorry I couldn't find a color picture, but we didn't have them back then.

  • I have never heard or seen this in tradition or the newchurch.
To make a guess as to why:
The women must cover their heads (not men) and
Red is the colour of the Holy Ghost and
as a mark of identity as a member of this particular group.

I don't see anything wrong with it.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,

  • Yes - for Confirmation before Vatican II, we girls had red beanies for head coverings, not veils, and wore a white robe like a school graduation robe, provided by the school/parish.  We had to have a pastel colored dress for underneath, and turned in the beanie and robe the next school day.  In fact, our school uniform in grade school had a blue beanie as part of it for when we all had to go to church.  That long ago, lace veils were no so much in vogue; women and girls wore hats on Sundays and holydays.
If any one saith that true and natural water is not of necessity for baptism, and on that account wrests to some sort of metaphor those words of Our Lord Jesus Christ, "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost...,"  Let Him Be Anathama.  -COUNCIL OF TRENT Sess VII Canon II “On Baptism"

  • The confirmation I witnessed in 1980 the boys and girls were wearing brown beanies.
During my confirmation in 1962 the boys were already separated from the girls since the 6th grade.
I remember the girls wearing white veils covering their heads. They were in the opposite pews.
Each confirmation candidate walked up to the sanctuary and knelt down on a kneeler and given the
sacrament of confirmation with the latin words pronounced by the Bishop with the slight slap on the face.
This was in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Our grammar school has green beanies for girls.  And a green jumper.

  • SSPV does the same thing. Boys/men wear red robes and no head coverings, girls/women wear white robes and red zucchettos on their heads.

  • I find it strange since that kind of head gear (perhaps it should not be called a zuchetto in this usage) usually implies a clerical state ... whether it was done pre-V2 or not.

And its origins are practical.  When clerics were tonsured, they originally had an area of hair corresponding to where a zuccheto would sit removed, and it was meant to keep that cleared-out area of hair WARM, like a tiny hat to cover the bald spot when it got cold.  So it came to symbolize the clerical state.  Later it came to be governed by Canon Law so that the different colors represented different clerical ranks.
