Sci-fi visions of the future notwithstanding, "virtual reality" is still an extremely poor, quite pathetic substitute for actual reality here in 2021.
We don't have holodecks or even convincing Virtual Reality systems.
Video games haven't changed fundamentally in about 25 years. Still just thousands of polygons on the screen -- visual only, with CD-quality sound effects.
And once again, the promise of AI has let us down. Games still require programmers to create content and behavior -- and the limitations of the computer generated characters are about as bad as any 1990's video game.
As for the video game experience itself, there is no smell, touch, taste, or any kind of interface/feedback aside from what you see on the screen, and occasional "vibrating controllers" which has been around since 1995.
VR is still a gimmick.
