  • Are you offended when someone calls you a " Rad Trad"?
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Of course I am!  It's a derogatory term. No attempt to make it a "friendly ribbing" term will change the true attitude of those who use it.

It was coined, and only used, by liberal-leaning or worldly Traditional Catholics.

Who do you ever see the term aimed at? Those who reject the world, those who totally reject the Conciliar Church and the Novus Ordo, those who would never attend a Novus Ordo Mass, those who don't own a TV, those who are sticklers for Catholic morality, etc.

Just like the word "nigger" became a term of contempt for black people in the late 20th century, despite the fact that some blacks use the term as slang or even a term of endearment among themselves.

Replace "rad trad" with "nigger", and "traditional Catholic" with "black person" and you have the situation pretty well summed up.

  • Meh. I'd rather be a "rad trad" than an apostate.
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • I think if the people who use that term, such as some at Catholic Answers, knew my views they would consider me a "rad trad," though I cannot remember anyone calling me that in person or online.
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • What Matthew said.

I personally don't like it, but I don't let it bother me. We'll be called names by the enemies of the Church, no matter how bad, for the sake of Christ and His Church.

  • I've never been called one but I avoid people who would use that term. I wouldn't engage them, either, they are too emotional for any kind of discussion.

I've never been called a "rad trad."  In as much as I understand slang, "rad" is a compliment that means "radical," or, in the slang of another era, "far out." Even if it is an insult, I've been called worse.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.
